The Perfect Play

A Play-by-Play Novel

Single mother Tara Lincoln is not only raising her teenage son, Nathan but she’s running her own event planning business. These two things have been her focus for years and dating is something that she hasn’t done in a long time. She’s gotten a big break when she was asked to plan an event for the San Francisco Sabers football team. While she may be a fan, she’s not fishing for a player to play with. She just wants to do a good job which is why when star quarterback, Mick Riley starts to chat her up, she discourages him.

Mick knows his days of playing professional football are numbered as he’s already 30 and this is a young man’s sport. Still, he plans on playing until he no longer can do his best. His had women throwing themselves at him for years and he’s taken advantage of that. He doesn’t apologize for this either. But when he meets Tara, he feels a connection that he’s never felt before and wants to explore it. It’s been a while since he’s had to go after a woman but he doesn’t think that is the attraction. Can he convince Tara to give him a chance?

Tara can’t believe she’s agreeing to spending the night with Mick but that’s all it’s going to be! She can’t get mixed up with him. She has other priorities. Mick has a different idea and is willing to go out of his way to achieve his goals. Can they make it work? They have secrets that they haven’t shared and problems that they haven’t explored.

Wow! From the hunky guy on the cover to the last sentence in the story, wow just about describes this book.

The characters are incredible. They are human and complex and real and perfect. Nathan is a typical teen, sullen, argumentative and knows he understand more than his mom is giving him credit for. Tara comes across as a fantastic single mom. She knows she’s made mistakes and is trying her best to juggle her responsibilities. As she says, she wishes parenthood came with a manual. Mick is a celebrity but he’s also so much more. He has parents and a family that he loves. He has problems and concerns about his professional life and his private life. Trying to balance that takes skill and he sometimes wonders if he has the skills to make it work.

Ms Burton introduces social issues in such a way that the whole problem seems to be reviled; the good, the bad and the ugly. Tara was a teen mother. Her experiences are not that much different than thousands of teen mothers across the country. Her ability to excel with this is an inspiration to women trying to cope with this and other problems. Alcoholism also rears its ugly head. Tara and Mick have each experienced life with this problem and its as complex as any other addiction. It’s how you deal with it that makes the difference. Though tough problems, at no time is there any preaching but instead it’s about the choices you make.

Okay, hunky guy plus single woman has to equate to some hot sex and it does. Not only is the sex hot and as frequent as you can get with a teenager around, it’s full of emotion. This isn’t a one night stand or a fantasy. It’s as real as you can get with all those messy emotions and feelings which can make or break a relationship.

One fly in the ointment is Mick’s agent. She doesn’t want to see Mick in a serious relationship with anyone much less a no name single mother. She’s going to do her best to get Tara out of the picture and she doesn’t can who she hurts to do it.

Like I said, wow. This book kept me up reading way past when I should have been asleep and kept my interest from the first page to the last. I fell in love with these characters quickly and fell in love with Mick’s family just as fast. I felt as if I were with the team and with this couple along every step of the way and while I not only don’t know or care much about football, it made no difference to my enjoyment of this wonderful story. You could see the sent up for the next book in this sports orientated series and I can’t wait to see how that one shapes up!

This is definitely a must read for anyone who loves Jaci Burton’s books, loves hot sexy guys and loves a great romantic story.
