Thousands of years ago, Pandora was asked by the gods to guard a box full of demons. These demons were all things that were bad in the world like wrath, pain, disease, and death. Several of the gods’ guard thinking that they should have been the ones to guard this box killed Pandora and the box was opened releasing all the demons. The gods to punish these guards had a demon possess each one. Now, man and demon cannot be separated. These former guards now are called the Lords of the Underworld and are immortal warriors. They search for the clues to find Pandora ’s Box in order to insure their survival.
Lucien has the demon death. It is his job to escort souls to either heaven or hell. These souls will call to him until he can’t put them off. Then, he will go into the spirit world and take the souls to where they belong.
Anya is the goddess of anarchy. She loves chaos and disorder but has learned to control this need by stealing little stuff. As long as she steals, her desire for anarchy is quieted. For some reason, she’s attracted to Lucien. Lucien, though seeming to be interested, isn’t sure he wants anarchy in his life. Still, he’s willing to work with her in the Lord’s quest for the relics they need to find to lead them to Pandora’s Box.
To help them along the way is Anya’s good friend, William. William loves women and doesn’t mind have more than one at a time. He’s pretty sure he knows where Lucien and Anya need to go to find the relic they’re searching for. The problem is he really doesn’t want to go with them but for them to have a chance to find it, he must. Anya steals a book that William hold dear to blackmail him into going with them.
The Lords are not the only ones looking for the relics. A group called the Hunters are also looking. They are also trying to capture all of the Lords to remove their demons from the earth. They blame them for every bad thing that has ever happened to them and society as a whole. While the Lords are responsible for many things, they are not responsible for everything. When the two groups meet, it’s not very nice and there is lots of bloodshed.
This is the second book in Ms Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. It has all the characters of the first book and carries on some of the storyline that was introduced in it like the Demon Wrath’s need to kill Danika and her family. (Danika’s story is in book 3.) Even though this is the second book in a series, it can be read and enjoyed by itself. There is enough information that you get an understanding of what went before, yet it does not distract from this book.
The characters are well developed. There are a lot of them so it can be confusing matching warrior with demon but once they start interacting and have dialog, it’s fairly easy to recognize who they are. It helps too that there is a list in the back of the book! Still, when Cameo opens her mouth to speak the fact that it hurts to listen due to her having the demon of misery becomes quickly evident.
Though this is Lucien and Anya’s story, the main focus is the finding of the relics. Because of this, there are several subplots going on as the other Lords are checking other places for other relics. Some of these subplots are so interesting that you want to learn more. When Paris, Keeper of Promiscuity, finds women that he wants to bed more than once, you want to know more about her. While you do get to know a little about her, you don’t get to know enough.
I finished this book wanting to know more, wanting to know some of the other Lord’s stories. The first relic was found, but will they be able to find the rest before the Hunters?
He is Death, destined to be her executioner.
Ordered by the gods to escort the tempestuous Anya's soul to hell, Lucien is an immortal warrior torn between duty and desire. For Anya sparks the flames of passion inside him as no one else ever has.
She is Anarchy, as beautiful as she is deadly.
There is nothing Anya wants more than to be Lucien's lover. His half-hearted attempts to kill her are exhilarating. His kisses - electrifying.
They should have been enemies but they become allies, traveling the world to find and destroy an ancient relic of the gods before it can be used against him -- separating them for eternity.
