This book wasn’t what I was thinking it was after reading the blurb. I expected it to be a college age couple, so characters in their 20’s. Instead, I found high school age characters with all the wild hormones of that age group. You also get all the angst and drama. I would say that this would be an excellent book for that age group except for the underage drinking which was considered normal and the very relaxed views on sex. Safe sex was not mentioned at all. Bass exhibited some very mature characteristics in some ways which was surprising as most boys in high school are not the perceptive. While the blurb implies happily-ever-afters, given the ages of the characters it would have been better to say happy for now. Now, given all that, I will say the emotional draw is outstanding. You feel the pain and confusion that Shelby has and quickly become invested in her struggles. This is definitely a heart wrenching story that teens should enjoy.
Shelby never expected to lose her entire family on their way home from a basketball game, yet it happened. Shelby was the only one to survive and she had serious injuries. Bass was her brother’s best friend. He wants to help but Shelby is closing him out. Can he figure out a way to get her to open up?
