Pursuit

Charlotte Court's family has owned Court Industries for over 100 years. Still, she would give up all the wealth and privileges she has to save her father's life. He is dying of cancer. Charlotte has been spending every hour she possibly can at his side letting Robert Haine run the company. Though he has done some things she and her father don't approve of, overall he has been doing a good job.

Robert Haines is an ambitious man. He wants Court Industries and is going to get it no matter what. If Charlotte had cooperated he would have just married her and acquired it but she wouldn't give him the time of day and only worried about that old man, her father. That's okay; he can take care of him and her. Once they are both out of the picture, Robert is sure that the board of director's will agree to let him be in charge. Once that is done, Robert knows he will get that big defense contract that the Courts have told him to forget and he stands to make millions!

Over in Afghanistan a Navy SEAL team is trying to get out of a hot zone. Leader, Matt Sanders sees a terrorist ready to blow up the chopper that has come for them. Knowing that he is going to die, he steps from the copper and signals it to take off. Matt kills the bad guy but he is wounded and will soon die except for the cowboy of the SEAL team who lassos him as the chopper rises. Matt was as good as dead except for the medic who wouldn't give up. Months later, Matt wakes up in a VA hospital back in the states.

In the normal course of events, Charlotte and Matt would never meet. Robert's hired security though kills Charlotte's dad, kills his nurse, shots Charlotte and makes it look like Charlotte did it! Charlotte's on the run wanted for murder. Scared to use her credit cards and finding Robert's security at the police station and her home, she's on the run trying to find a safe place to hide. Matt is too injured to return to the SEALs and contacts a former SEAL and friend who lives in Baja Mexico for a place to stay while he is recovering. There he finds a beautiful angel watching over him except his angel is in more trouble than she knows.

This book is excellent.

Ms Jennings keeps the story flowing and is able to have the reader follow what Robert is planning and what Charlotte and Matt are doing with ease. The transition between the two is not awkward and you don't loose what is going on in one place with what is going on in the other.

The characters have depth. You can understand Charlotte's love for her father. Charlotte tells of their close, loving relationship and you can almost feel it. You get insight on why Robert is so greedy and his motivation as it is revealed that he grew up poor and with an abusive father. Even secondary characters such as Charlotte's maid at home are fleshed out to give them substance.

While this book is marketed as a romantic suspense, it could be marketed as just a novel. While there is romance in it, it doesn't take away from the story nor do the "romantic" scenes just become about sex. The real romance is the building of a relationship. As for the suspense part of this book, readers pretty much know who did what from the beginning. The only suspense was how Charlotte was going to prove it and maybe if she would stay alive long enough to prove it but truly the outcome was pretty obvious within a few chapters. Still, the building of Charlotte and Matt's relationship and their individual growth was great.

Based on this books cover and trailer on the back, I would not have normally read this book. I am so thankful that it was sent to me. This is one book where I can say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
