Nadia Knows Best

Nadia Kinsella is tempted by Jay Tiernan when he helps her after she slides off a snowy country road and gets stuck in the ditch. But, she resists temptation because she’s in love with her neighbor, Laurie.

Laurie is a model and travels a lot but Nadia trusts him. After meeting him at the airport, she knows something isn’t right. It takes a while but she finally learns that Laurie wants to break up. He’s off and doesn’t think they should be tied down to each other.

A year later, Nadia bumps into Jay in town. They hit it off and Nadia ends up with a job working for Jay. She’s thrilled and hopes to get to know Jay better.

And then, Laurie comes back home and he wants to pick up where they had left off. Nadia isn’t sure what she feels towards Laurie but she’s willing to give him another chance.

Two men and lots of confusion. Where will this end up?

Adding to this is a sister, Clare who thinks the world should revolve around her, her problems and her dreams plus a sister, Tilly who is trying to be a typical 13 year old and a grandmother who is having an affair with Laurie’s father and has some secrets she’s not wanting to share, a mother, Leonie who is self centered and a father who may have found love again.

There’s a lot going on in this household!

The characters in this story are outstanding. Each has their own problems, concerns and personality. Nadia comes across as a down to earth woman who is trying to live her life the best she can. She wants to support her friends, love her family, enjoy her work and find a man worth loving. Jay is hard working and family orientated. He’s definitely interested in Nadia but he’s not interested in sharing her. Laurie is full of confidence and swagger. He’s sure Nadia will get back with him. Clare’s love life sucks and she has a few lessons to learn before she gets her act together. Leonie is a free spirit who hasn’t had much to do with her daughters’ lives. Suddenly she wants to do more with Tilly which has shaken Tilly’s world. Have Leonie grown up or is she just using Tilly for her own self reasons?

The plot is simple and yet really complex. The basic plot is Nadia being attracted to two different men. The complexity comes in when you look at her total life; her family, her job and her goals. There is a lot going on and all of it directly or indirectly affects her and the choices she makes.

This book is set in England and written by an English author. Due to those facts, there will be British words that may be unfamiliar to an American reader. This becomes apparent on the very first page when the wing of Nadia’s car gets crumpled. For the most part these words are fairly easy to figure out when they are within context. But, expect them from the beginning of the book to the end. Also, expect some fabulous descriptions of British life.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Nadia and her family. I began to feel as if I were part of it! I could sympathize with some of the events and had to laugh at others. The emotional pull was such that I was on the same roller coaster ride as the characters and I wasn’t sure where we were going to get off. On the ride though came heartbreak, love and discoveries.

Don’t be put off by the length of this book. At 480 pages it is long but the story needs that many pages to be told correctly. There isn’t anything that I would have left out.
