Desmond, Des, Sutton works for the Wyndewin League, or a paranormal police force where he helps keeps knowledge of magic and magical beings away from mortals. He just helped the League stop a demon who was giving drugs to the lupines but now a new form of this drug is back out but it’s directed to humans. Des has been called into his superior’s office to be warned not to use the lupines or elves for information or to even hang out with them. The problem with that is Des’s sister is married to one of the elves and he’s friends with several of the lupines. Okay, and he’s attracted to one feisty alpha female lupine, or werewolf!
Lana bumps into Des as he’s trying to figure out how to get a same of this new drug to be tested. She volunteers to get a sample as she is a student at the university, even if she is 30. Des turns her down but Lana isn’t letting up. She’s determined to help and know that being a werewolf is to her advantage in keeping safe. Now, if she could just get Des to accept her as an equal.
Though they started out just discussing what to do about the drug issue, Des and Lana end up in bed. It seems their attraction towards each other was more than they could resist.
Things go down hill almost at once. Though Des gets his drug sample, there is a traitor working within the League and Des and Lana are set up to be killed. Only with the help of a good demon, and like anyone ever thought a demon would have a good side, are they able to stay alive.
To get to the root of the problem and to take care of it, Des and Lana will have to travel through demon dimensions and stretch their fledgling relationship to the limits. They can’t do it alone but by asking for help they are putting lives at risk.
This is the fourth and looks like the final book in Cindy Spencer Pape’s urban fantasy series set in Detroit, MI. While you don’t have to read the previous books to follow and enjoy this one, the series is so awesome you’re going to want to.
The characters of Lana and Des are done super well. Lana is a werewolf who knows what she wants. She’s feisty and opinionated. She also has goals and dreams. She realizes that she probably won’t have a mate or have children. She’s willing to push against tradition and make her pack accept her as an equal. She will accept no less. Des is torn between his work and his personal life. He’s a good mage and believes in his work but he doesn’t always understand the rules against other magical beings. He usually stays to himself but finds that he’s becoming friends with of all things, lupines! This goes against everything he’s been told. And then, to find that he’s attracted to one is just really confusing him. Is this worth his job?
While previous books have had a wonderful world built, this book takes it to a whole new level. Not only does the story revolve around Detroit and its salt mines, other world realms are also explored. Unlike the previous books which basically stayed in Underhill, this one visited some very well thought out demon realms which gave it almost a fantasy feel. These realms were not only full of interesting and unique inhabitants but they also had their own languages and customs.
I really enjoyed this story. It was built on the previous three books but didn’t need them to hold it up. The characters from those books were part of this one and this story gave you enough information concerning them that you had a good idea about their place and their personality. Lana and Des have been leading up to having their own story and it was perfect for them.
Weather you enjoy urban romance, fantasy or just a story that is done outside the box you’ll find this story will entertain you like no other. It is more than just a romance though there is romance in it. It’s also more than just a nice fantasy story though it resembles many of them. It is a story that will capture your imagination and will leave you wanting more.
As a cop who keeps paranormals in line, Des has a hard time trusting them. So why does he want the beautiful werewolf Lana more than his next breath? She's mouthy, flamboyant and distractingly sexy—not the type of woman for a reserved mage like him. Lana admires Des, but she can't be with someone who won't take her seriously, no matter how much she'd love to rip off his dress shirt.
When a dangerous new drug shows up in Detroit, Des must locate the source, and Lana is determined to help. But their plan goes awry, trapping them in a demon dimension. To return home, Lana and Des must flee through a series of unpredictable alternate realities, fighting enemies while trying to shut down the drug trade. But if they're going to survive, they'll have to rely on each other, even though getting closer will add fuel to a fire that's already burning out of control...
