Meagan Rose Kelly had dreams that gave her a clue of what was going to happen next in her life. She would be sitting in the most beautiful rose garden imaginable. If it was storming, something bad would happen like when her parents died. If it was sunshiny and the birds were singing, something good would happen like when her paintings started selling. This time, Meagan knew something was going to happen and that it would change her life but she wasn’t sure if it was for the good or bad. Still, she needed to get on with her day which included teaching at the art co-op. She didn’t expect to literally bump into the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen as she was coming out of the building.
Ric Thornhill is on a mission for his queen. He’s to find the daughter of Lord Rose so she can take her place at the Seelie Council. This daughter’s vote is necessary for the queen to stay in power so Ric has a deadline and some powerful promises of what will happen to him if he doesn’t succeed. He’s determined that she is the Detroit area but not exactly where. He does know that he has to be at a certain corner at a certain time though. There he is bumped into by a woman and has an instant sexual attraction to her. This isn’t normal for Ric. In all his 800+ years, he’s never felt a shock like the one he just received. Still, he’ll come back to her. His mission is his primary goal; unless this woman could be the one he’s looking for.
Ric has agreed to sing at a club owned by two brothers. They have been friends for a long time and as Ric is well known in the mortal world as a singer and his official profession in the fey is as a bard, he singing in the club was not a strange request. Ric doesn’t expect to see the woman who ran into him there but she is! He asks her out to dinner to determine if Meagan is the daughter he’s been looking for.
If she is, Ric has to convince her to come with him to the Seelie Council, no matter what the cost. He also has to keep her safe from the faction that would like to vote the current queen out and they don’t play fair! Considering Meagan has no idea that she is a Halfling, Ric has his work cut out for him. Getting involved with Meagan doesn’t even factor in, so why can’t he keep his hands off her?
This is a fantastic book!
The characters are great. They are varied and have terrific personalities. Ric is a bard and a spy and a sex toy for the queen. Meagan was raised mortal, has no idea that elves are nothing more than a children’s story and very independent. Joining the two main characters are mortals, more elves, a gay werewolf, a determined witch and a lot more. The queen is depicted as a powerful woman who doesn’t share well. She also has no problem killing those she deems deserves it. Is she going to be willing to share Ric, or regardless of how much she needs Meagan for this vote, is Meagan’s days numbered?
The world of the Seelie is complex and unique. Lots of time and effort was used to explain and show how the Seelie world and the mortal world mesh together. The pageantry and spender of the court was described so you could visualize it as is the world outside the court. Different members of this world make themselves known from servants to guards to Lords. Not everyone is an elf but many are mixtures of different races including mortals.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I wasn’t sure I would but within pages I was engrossed and didn’t want to be bothered. It was fast paced and interesting. Twists and turns showed up and changed the plot into new and interesting directions. Secondary characters were unique and I wanted to know them better. (Hopefully many of them will show up in future books!) Shades of gray were common but that is also true with real life. I can’t think of anything that wasn’t done extremely well and I really look forward to more of this complex, unique world and this Detroit that I never knew existed
Detroit artist Meagan Kelly has had a strong sixth sense all her life, but that doesn't mean the gorgeous stranger's crazy story—that she's a half-elf, half human heiress—is true. But Meagan can't deny the evidence of her own eyes—he's Fae. A tall, blond, handsome, pointy-eared elf—and a man she just can't get enough of.
Ric Thornhill's assignment just got a lot more complicated. The more time he spends with Meagan, the harder it is to see her as a political tool to prevent an all-out war between humans and Fae.
Now Meagan's in a race to master her newly released powers in time to prevent the conflict, convince a jealous Queen not to strip Ric of his powers, and find out if she can build a life that straddles two worlds.
