This second book in this wonderful series about the McCord family revolves around playboy and world traveler, Wyatt. Wyatt’s family left the ranch to travel the world and though Wyatt rebelled against this life style, he seemed to continue even after he was grown and his parents were killed in a small plane crash. When he returns to the ranch, Wyatt realizes that he has come home and this is what he was looking for as he traveled all over.
Emergency medic, Marilee Trainor has caught Wyatt’s eye. The pretty medic treasurers her freedom though after growing up in a strict military household with a father that had to control everything. She has no desire to get involved with anyone, especially someone who has a reputation for loving them and leaving them. Still, Wyatt makes her laugh and she enjoys his company. Will it come down to a choice between her freedom or Wyatt?
As in the previous book, the McCord family is looking for a lost treasure that is hidden somewhere on their ranch. The town thinks they are all crazy as coots, which is how their grandfather got the name Coot. Yet, it seems that there are others that believe the treasure is close to being found and instead of taking on the McCords; they go after those they love. Could the accidents that Marilee keeps experiencing have anything to do with the McCord’s lost gold?
I really am enjoying reading about this wonderful western family, the McCords. They aren’t perfect and they definitely have their own quirks which make them so believable and loveable. While this book is predominately about Wyatt, his cousins, Jesse and Zane as well as Jesse’s wife, Amy play important roles. This is a family that lives, works and plays together.
The characters are extremely well developed with family history and each having a life. Marilee is the county on call medic. She loves her job and takes it very seriously. Wyatt has jobs to do on the ranch and when he takes on some of the more menial jobs, people notice. None of the characters are cardboard cut outs but well rounded interesting people that you would know anywhere.
The mystery of the missing gold is like trying to figure out a puzzle. Little pieces keep showing up and it’s up to the family to figure out where they go, or if they go at all! I’m looking forward to the last book in this series to see if they find it or if it is lost forever. Regardless, Zane is filming it all for his documentary.
From plane crashes to death threats to pizza late at night, I couldn’t put this book down. There was always something going on and I need to read what. I was pretty sure what the ending would be for Wyatt and Marilee and it only took a short while to figure out who in town was causing the problems but I still wanted to go along with Wyatt and his Harley and Marilee in her plane. This story kept my interest and I can’t wait until Zane’s story comes out.
This is a wonderful romance/mystery that can be read alone but truly you want to read Jesse’s book, Montana Legacy.
