Mercy is back! That is Mercy Gunderson and this time she’s joined the FBI. That doesn’t mean that she’s left behind any of the feistiness or opinions that have her fans loving her but that she’s taken it to an organization that doesn’t exactly like individuality. Mercy has a way of looking at things a bit differently than anyone else and her take no prisoners attitude could get her in trouble, or could have her solve a murder case out on the reservation.
Back on her ranch, Mercy is sharing her home and life with Sheriff Dawson. They’re doing okay but when Dawson’s ex sends their son, Lex to live with them, Mercy has to make some changes and it isn’t like she’s real maternal! That’s not the only changes to her home life. Long time housekeeper, Sophie has decided to retire and her children and grandchildren don’t want Mercy around. One has even said she’s bad for their family. But, when the murderer strikes, Mercy doesn’t care what the family says because she still considers them part of her life. Someone better beware!
This is a hard hitting murder mystery that has a kick-ass female leading the way. There are no punches pulled throughout the story weather it’s a fight scene, a crime scene or descriptions of life on the reservation. It’s obvious that lots of research has been done and that Ms. Armstrong is knowledgeable about the subject matter. There are plenty of twists and turns to through you off the track while you’re trying to figure out who is the murderer but this is only adding interest and depth to the story. Just beware, this mystery is nitty gritty, not sunshine and light.
This is the third book in Lori Armstrong’s Mercy Gunderson series. While it would probably be better if you read the first two books prior to reading this in, it isn’t necessary. There are few references to the other books but the other books give you a better perspective on Mercy, her relationships and the other characters in this book. However, don’t let not reading those books stop you from reading this one. Just don’t be shocked when Mercy is merciless.
In the spirit of J.A. Jance, Nevada Barr, and C.J. Box comes Shamus Award-winning author Lori Armstrong’s sharp and gritty Merciless, about Black Ops army sniper-turned-FBI agent Mercy Gunderson and her quest for vengeance when a killer narrows his sights on her and her family.
Mercy Gunderson is thrown into her first FBI murder case, working with the tribal police on the Eagle River Reservation, where the victim is the teenaged niece of the recently elected tribal president. When another gruesome killing occurs during the early stages of the investigation, Mercy and fellow FBI agent Shay Turnbull are at odds about whether the crimes are connected.
Mercy can’t discuss her reservations about the baffling cases with her live-in boyfriend, Eagle River County Sheriff Mason Dawson, due to job confidentiality, and the couple’s home on the ranch descends into chaos when Dawson’s eleven-year-old-son Lex is sent to live with them. While hidden political agendas and old family vendettas turn ugly, masking motives and causing a rift among the tribal police, the tribal council, and the FBI, Mercy realizes that the deranged killer is still at large—and is playing a dangerous game with his sights set on Mercy as his next victim.
Torn between her duty to the FBI and her duties to those she loves, Mercy must unleash the cold, dark, merciless killer inside her and become the predator, rather than the prey.
