Allison Beckstrom, Allie, has joined forces with several friends and her boyfriend, Zay to try to find out if the wells of magic are poisoned and to try to find a cure for the deadly attacks of the veiled. But, Allie has more problems than that. She’s killed the head of Portland’s magic community and she’s wanted for embezzlement by the police. This leaves her and her friends on the run trying to hide from just about everyone. Oh, and for some unknown reason Allie is suddenly allergic to magic and can’t do any.
Hidden in Allie’s mind is her father. She thinks he might be able to help but given his track record, this may or may not be true.
The only other person who may be able to help is a mad doctor. He was so crazy that the Authority, the governing magical council, had him closed so he couldn’t remember how to do the magic he was so bizarre with. Allie’s dad thinks this mad man might be able to figure the cure out but to do so might mean unclosing him. Do they dare?
This is the 8th book in Devon Monk’s Allie Beckstrom series. To really enjoy this book, you’re going to need to read some, if not all, of the previous books. Much of what is happening is based on events that happened in previous books. While some of the backstory is given during this one, much of the detail is missing.
The characters in these books are absolutely outstanding. Allie is the main character and in this book she finds herself in a leadership position. This isn’t a far stretch as she’s been leading the Hounds of Portland for a while. Yet, she isn’t entirely comfortable in this role which comes out several times. Zay, her boyfriend, is also her soul compliment. He can hear her thoughts and feel her pain. Of course, that works both ways which gives both of them some grief as Zay has to push his magical limits to try to keep them safe. The other characters, Shame, Terric, Maude, etc are just as well done. They have magical powers but they are also real people with real issues. Shame and Terric may also be soul compliments but they’ve never been tested and Shame is denying it which causes Terric some discomfort.
The world that has been developed is complex and wonderful. There are several types of magic. Different people are more adept at different ones. There are veiled which are ghostly pieces of magical people who have died. There are non-magical people who don’t know anything about the struggle within the magical community. There is even a section of Portland where magic doesn’t work well. There is an entire world that is built and expands with each book.
The tension and suspense is gripping. Who is going to die? Is a cure going to be found? Where is the couple who started this entire mess? Can they be found and stopped? So many questions and so many problems that need to be figured out and just as Allie thinks they have a lead on one, more pop up. Soon, you’re so entangled that these issues have become real and you can’t wait for a solution.
I love this series. I loved this book. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. I quickly became involved with what was happening and with all the twists and turns found myself glued to this book. Everything about it from the characters to the writing to whatever is excellent. This series should make any one who loves urban fantasy thrilled and wanting more. Which is good as this series hasn’t ended yet!
I’m not talented enough to express how much I love this series. So, do me a favor and read it. Then, you’ll agree that this is one of the best urban fantasy series out there.
Allison Beckstrom's talent for tracking spells has put her up against some of the darkest elements in the world of magic. But now, magic itself has been poisoned, and Allie's undead father may have left the only cure in the hands of a madman.
