Allison, Allie, Beckstrom knows that there is a price to pay if you use magic. Weather that price is your own discomfort or a proxy’s is not the question as there is a price. She originally started with just a spark of magic and now she’s pretty much in charge of the Hounds.
Hounds get called to follow magical trails, to give information about a magical happening. Many times the police will call Allie or another Hound she knows to look over a crime scene.
Allie’s boyfriend/lover is Zayvion, Zay, Jones. He’s a guardian of a gate and is able to work all types of magic. He also is training Allie in defensive arts. This is good as she’s going to need these skills as well as all the magic she can come up with to stay alive and well.
A wild magic storm is getting ready to hit Portland. Last time, Allie was in one of these storms she ended up in a coma for a few months and lost much of her memory. She’s not looking forward to this storm.
Allie also has another person who is with her at all times, her dad. When he died, some how part of his soul ended up in Allie. It also ended up in Greyson, a man who is now part monster.
This is the fourth book in the Allie Beckstrom series. While I did enjoy this book, I also did feel lost at times. Previous events make a large impact on this book. This gives the feel as if I missed something that I shouldn’t have. Yet as I continued reading, these feelings lessened. I have to admit though, reading the previous books would have made this book much better.
“Zay and I were currently fighting. Terric and Shame had been avoiding each other for years, and not only was Chase Zay’s ex-girlfriend, but also, the guy she dumped him for was the murderer we were about to hunt down. For cripes’ sake. Could we be any more dysfunctional?” This quote gives an interesting insight to all the characters. Like a big, chaotic family, they work together, kind of, and try to make things happen. While it might take a little while to figure out all the roles the different characters play, once figured out, they are awesome. While Zay may get a Zen face and Shame acts irresponsible, there is so much more beneath their masks. Allie may not know much, as she is a student, but she makes up for it in pure determination. As for Chase, she loves Greyson even if he isn’t himself proving love conquerors all, or does it?
The world that has been developed for this series is extremely complex. I wasn’t sure I was following all the details but I also found that it didn’t really matter. Just go with the flow and it becomes clearer as the book continues. This probably wouldn’t have been a problem had a started with the first book and watched the world build on itself but I didn’t. Still, I liked this world with gates to guard and several types of magic and best friends.
The plot becomes extremely complex. It starts with Greyson escaping from the cage that he had been put into which should have been impossible. Also of note within the first few chapters is a large wild magic storm that should hit Portland in a couple of days. Though either of those two events should have been enough, more is added making your interest in the unfolding events peak. Allie comes to a point where she has to decide, who to save. And is there a right choice?
I found myself really enjoying this story. The characters, world and intertwining plots left me wanting more. While I do strongly recommend reading the previous books, I did find myself becoming involved with events and finding previous events either coming clearer or not truly mattering to what was currently happening.
Engaging, fast pace, a bit quirky, and fully interesting, I find that I can highly recommend this book.
