Allison, Allie, Beckstrom is a Hound, which is someone who tracks people for a price. She works within the Authority's rules but that's about to change. There's something strange happening in Portland . It appears as though the magic is poisoned and the Veil are affecting everyone causing death.
Allie's boyfriend, Zayvion or Zay lives to follow the Authority even when it means hurting their friends. While Allie has no problems being a bit of a rebel, she does try to understand Zay's position but it's not always easy.
After the major battle and Zay and Allie coming back from death (previous books), it was decided that Portland needed new leadership. Therefore, the old Authority figures are removed and new ones appointed. To head the Authority will be Bartholomew Wray, someone who hated Allie's father and seems to know that Allie's father is some how sharing her mind. Can Bartholomew separate his feelings towards Allie's father from Allie?
Magic on the Line is the 7th book in Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom novels series. It picks up where the last book, Magic on the Hunt left off. If you haven't read this series from the beginning you may find yourself lost and not being able to follow all the secondary story lines.
The characters are great. Allie is a worrier and worries about everyone and everything. She's also having problems with her magic which worries her. She didn't realize how much she relied on it until she couldn't use it. Zay is a man of honor and mission. He truly believes in the Authority and its belief of keeping non-magic users safe from magic. When his loyalties are strained between what the Authority believes and what he's asked to do for the Auhority, he's going to have to make some life changing decisions.
The secondary characters are just as unique and personable. Shame is Zay's good friend but he's got problems of his own which he brings into everything he does. Bartholomew has his own agenda but no one is quite sure what it is and how far he's willing to go. The Hounds have decided Allie needs to be followed for her own protection. Each Hound is a unique individual and they are brought more into the forefront this book.
The situations are intense and draw you into the action. Things are falling apart in Portland and no one is sure why. Allie suddenly can't use her magic but she can see magic without calling up sight. Zay is battling inner battles on more than one front. Shame is slowly wasting away while denying Terric is his Soul Compliment.
Absolutely another awesome addition to this action packed series. I was drawn in almost immediately and then just didn't want to put this book down. Once finished, I was looking for more and wanting to know what next. The characters seem to grow and evolve as each book progresses the story. Things don't always happen easily or the way that characters want them too. All these things make these stories come alive.
I highly recommend this series and this book is an excellent addition to it. If you like paranormal, urban fantasy with a touch of romance and occasional violence, check it out but start with the first book so you get all of the back story.
Allison Beckstrom has willingly paid the price of pain to use magic, and has obeyed the rules of the Authority, the clandestine organization that makes-and enforces-all magic policy. But when the Authority's new boss, Bartholomew Wray, refuses to believe that the sudden rash of deaths in Portland might be caused by magic, Allie must choose to follow the Authority's rules, or turn against the very people for whom she's risked her life.
To stop the plague of dark magic spreading through the city, all that she values will be on the line: her magic, her memories, her life. Now, as dead magic users rise to feed upon the innocent and the people closest to her begin to fall, Allie is about to run out of options.
