Magic at the Gate

Allie Beckstrom Series, #5

Allison Beckstrom or Allie is a Hound. Not in a dog type of hound but a magical one. Hounds can smell magic and have extraordinary hearing, like a hound dog. She works with the Portland police to make sure that magic is used correctly and within the law. That isn’t to say she doesn’t use magic in other ways. She does, and then she pays the price. You can’t use magic without paying some kind of price.

Allie has a boyfriend, Zayvion Jones or Zay. He’s a guardian of the gates which means he can open or close gates coming from another dimension. During a major fight in the middle of a wild magic storm, Zay’s soul was sent into death. His body is still alive but soulless. To restore Zay, someone has to go into death after him and retrieve his soul.

Allie doesn’t even ask, she follows. Death is a bit different than Allie was expecting but she’s determined. She will be asked to do things that she never expected. But Zay is worth it to Allie. Will he think the same thing?

Back in Portland a battle is raging as some very powerful magic users try to take over the Alliance. Magic as everyone knows it is heading for change and what that change will be will be determined by the winner!

This is the fifth book by Devon Monk about Allie Beckstrom and her adventures. It picks up where the last book left off. This is great for those that follow this series as there is no time not allotted for. However, for those joining the series with this book, it may take a while to figure out exactly what is going on. Many events that happened in previous books are referenced in this one. However, it is possible to follow the story without having read the previous books.

The characters are very well done. Allie is the main character and the book is from her point of view. She is a very complex character partly because her father possesses part of her brain and occasionally tries to take over. While Zay is her boyfriend and should be in the forefront in the story, this is not the case in this book as he is in a coma for most of it. His good friend Shame takes up the slack as the mysterious friend.

Suspense is the name of the game along with magic. Who is this shadow man that Allie keeps seeing? Who is allied with which group? As the battles heat up, there are few Allie can trust. She goes head to head with several members of the Alliance over issues she’s passionate about. Things get hot and heavy, especially when Allie suddenly has black fire coming out of her hand.

I’m really enjoying this series even though I started with the book prior to this one. Allie is a strong woman who weighs her risks. The world she occupies is well done and interesting. Each book brings you a little bit further in to it and leaves you wanting more.

By the end of this book, the battle lines are drawn and the war has started. Glimpses of what might end this conflict are shown but how to accomplish it isn’t. Allie is pushing the Alliance to stretch past its comfort zone while she holds on to Zay to keep herself grounded. What happens next is anyone’s guess but I fully plan on being there!
