This is the third book in C.H. Admirand’s The Secret Lives of Cowboys series. While you don’t need to read the previous two books to enjoy this one, I fell in love with the Garahan brothers and Pleasure, TX in the first book and looked forward to each of the following books. I was never disappointed and I’m sad that this will be the last one.
The characters are terrific. Jesse lives by the “cowboy code” which his grandfather taught him. It’s kind of from the old westerns and pretty much keeps Jesse straight and out of trouble. But I’ll be honest; I fell in love with Jesse with this paragraph: “Looking down, he noticed a pint-size cowgirl staring up at him, her big blue eyes wide with wonder. Not much surprised Jesse Garahan, but the little bit of a thing, no bigger than a fairy, was wearing pink—from the top of her head to the soles of her feet—and stood out like a swirl of cotton candy at the county fair.” That was it, Jesse melted when confronted with this little bit of a girl and so did I. Of course, that description was of Lacy and not only was she a pint-size cowboy but she’s inquisitive and enthusiastic about anything and everything cowboy. You can’t help but love her. Now, that isn’t to say that her mother, Danielle, isn’t just as interesting. After all, she grabbed Jesse’s attention first and she definitely kept it! Danielle just doesn’t want to be burnt a second time by a cowboy chasing a dream.
Much of this story takes place on the Garahan ranch. The descriptions of it are awesome. You can visualize it. There is a big rambling house with four bedrooms and a porch swing. The driveway has a fork with one side leading to the house and the other to a special pond. Cattle are in the pastures and 5 horses are in the barn. There is also a bunkhouse and other out buildings. Each is brought to life and becomes real as the story unfolds.
Expect some sex because Jesse is seriously going after Danielle. They don’t just jump in bed with each other but with the help of a sister-in-law and a future one, Jesse gets Danielle right where he wants her, in his bed. Jesse can’t stop with only one time and Danielle sure doesn’t want him too but with Lacy in the picture, they need to time things just right so don’t expect them to be making love every other page.
I seriously loved this book for so many reasons. First, the characters are great. Not only are the new ones to this book fantastic but those that were introduced in earlier books are just as interesting as they were in their books. The love story that progresses is different than those in the previous books because there is a child involved. The incorporation of this important character showed what Jesse was made of and the commitment that he not only was willing to make, wanted to make. Yet, the love that developed was perfect and the sex was hot and I couldn’t ask for anything else.
This book and this series is perfect for anyone who loves contemporary western romance. Hot guys, independent women and to kill for story lines kept me glued to each story and had me up way past my bed time because I just couldn’t put them down. And, as much as I thoroughly enjoyed the Garahan’s and Pleasure, TX, I was sad to know that this was the last book.
But, don’t loose hope. Even though this is the last book for the Garahan’s in Pleasure, TX, you get introduced to some NY city firefighter cousins and some Colorado Marshall ones. They’re just as hot, or maybe even hotter. So, maybe, just maybe, there will be some more Garahan men heating us up.
Jesse Garahan’s dream in high school was to race cars. As he matured, he knew that was a dream and he grew to love the ranch that had been in his family for generations. That doesn’t mean that Jesse doesn’t speed down the road on his way to town and that’s exactly what he was doing when he noticed the car on the side of the road with a pretty blonde about to hurt herself.
As Jesse stops to help, he meets Danielle Brockway and her 4 year old daughter, Lacy. Danielle has recently divorced her husband, Lacy’s father. He wiped out their bank account, bought an RV and left to follow his dream of being a bull rider in the rodeo. Danielle, unable to keep their house, is heading to Pleasure, TX to spend the summer with her uncle and hopefully find a job. She doesn’t want to get involved with another cowboy but Jesse sure has her attention.
Jesse sure would like to get to know Danielle better and Lacy has him intrigued. Danielle is a bit skittish so Jesse knows he needs to go slow. Another issue may be Danielle’s uncle still holds a grudge against Jesse and his brothers due to them taking a pie from his dinner when they were children. Still Jesse is going to give knowing Danielle his best try.
Then, Jesse gets the opportunity to race cars! He’s keeping it a secret but he’s winning money. The money is going towards the ranch’s bills but the time it takes for practice and racing is cutting into his time with Danielle and Lacy. What to do?
Danielle doesn’t know what Jesse is doing and she’s worried that it’s something that will take him from her. She doesn’t have a lot of trust in men. What should she do?
Jesse Garahan no longer believes in love. Until he meets Danielle Brockway and her tiny daughter, Lacey, on their way to their new home in Pleasure, TX. Danielle's worthless ex-husband left her high and dry, and now she's looking for a simple small-town to start over in-and then she meets Jesse. She just can't seem to help herself where long-limbed, swaggering Texas men are concerned. Suddenly, life is anything but simple.
