Lilya Orensdaughter was born into a poor but loving family. When she wasn't quite a teen, she was orphaned and had to learn to live on the street. By the time she was 17, she entered into a relationship with Ivan Lazarson leaving her job and moving in with him. Just a year later Ivan gave her to his men and Lilya was found in an alley by Byron Andrpov beaten and barely alive. He nursed her back to health and then left, leaving her his house. It took Lilya almost a year to leave the house and return to living a life. Now, she works in the Temple of Dreams , servicing a select few clients and never getting close to any of them.
When Bryon comes and asks her to help his good friend Alek Chaikoveii comes to terms with his healing magic, Lilya can't refuse him even though she knows that this move may break her heart. What she doesn't expect is to find herself attracted to Alek while she's sleeping with Bryon! What she won't do is come between friends. Can they work this out?
Lilya doesn't know why but it feels like someone is watching her. When someone breaks into Byron's house, she's not sure what to make of it. Could this be someone from her past? Perhaps a turned down client? Or, maybe someone even more sinister?
This book is a sequel from Ms Bast's book Jeweled. You do not have to read Jeweled to thoroughly enjoy this book but the characters in Jeweled do make appearances in Jaded.
The characters in this story are awesome. Lilya is scared to love again and wants to control her emotions as well as her relationships but what she feels for Byron breaks all her rules. She wanted him before he left her and that desire has never left her. Bryon knows Lilya is broken and will never love again. He knows that getting close to her will only break his heart but he can't help himself. Even though he's brought Lilya for Alek, he feels jealousy. Alek has ghosts in his own past which causes him not to use his magic and not to get close to women. Lilya and her intellectual curiosity intrigue him but he also sees her relationship with Byron getting closer. Does he dare make a move towards Lilya?
This trio lives in a world that somewhat mirrors ours yet has enough differences that you know it's not of our world. It has a definite eastern European flavor in the names and the town settings. But, it also has a group of people that can do magic. This group was once an elite privileged group until an uprising and revolution three years ago. Now, they are in hiding and cautiously banding together. There is a criminal element that reminds you of mafia or major gang behavior. Like our society sports are part of the social fabric as is higher education. However, unlike our society, threesomes while not common aren't rare and aren't looked down on.
There are sexual scenes in this story. While most are Lilya and one of the men, there are several with Lilya and both of the men. They are graphic but they are also full of emotion and work well into the story. There isn't sex just for sex's sake but there is sex as part of a loving relationship.
I really liked this book. I enjoyed seeing the bad past become a fantastic future. I found the dynamics between the men interesting as they struggled to figure out how to make things work. After all, neither wants to share but neither wants to hurt their good friend either. I liked that the story wasn't all about sex but was about the total relationship and everyone's various interests.
Once again Ms Bast has given her readers a story that not only entertains but has them wishing that they could find what Lilya has. It also provides inspiration that you can overcome bad things and get your happy ending. This story is a total package; Lilya overcoming her past to find love, hot men who can stand on their own but are willing to compromise to get what they want, and three people who are will to fight for the love they each deserve.
