After falling for the promises of a Douglas and loosing her virginity, Deidre Chattan’s dowry has been given to the church and she’s been placed there as well. She’s not there to take vows as she’d definitely not worthy like her younger sister but she’s there to do penance. She understands this and while she’s not exactly happy, she’s complying the best she can.
Quinton Cameron is a highland lord and is searching for a run away queen. He’s been drawn to Deidre from the first time he meet her, her fiery spirit calling to him. Learning she’s in an abbey that he’s been sent to search unsettles him. Though the queen is not found, Quinton leaves some men to watch the general area.
James II’s mother does arrive at the abbey that very night. A quick plan is decided on after the queen discovers how closely Deidre resembles her. If they change clothes, Deidre could leave the searchers after her while the queen clothed in rough church robes would be able to get away. Deidre sees this as an ideal opportunity to escape the church and get the independence she desires.
The plan goes according to plan with Quinton’s men capturing the “queen”. There is no way for Deirdre to evade them, though she tries before Quinton discovers his men’s mistake. Will he understand her reasons or will her return her to the abbey? During this unsettled time in Scotland, alliances are necessary and Quinton has to decide what to do with Deidre, follow his head or his heart.
This is the second book in Mary Wine’s series about the Chattan sisters. Though the first book would give you a lot of background information, it’s not necessary to read it to fully understand and enjoy this book. Those that read the first though will enjoy watching the manipulations that are happening to secure the happiness of several highland lords.
These characters are great. Deidre is feisty, opinionated and really doesn’t care about Quinton’s high social status. Though she finds herself attracted to Quinton and desiring him, she will not compromise her values or thoughts. The only compromise she makes it to keep their discussions private. Quinton is a typical man. He knows he’s right about everything and his opinion is the only one that matters. It takes quite a bit before he realizes that everything isn’t’ exactly going according to his desires and Deidre definitely is her own person.
The time frame that this story is placed into is one of turmoil. James II is the ruler of Scotland but too young to take the throne. He has advisors to basically run the country. His mother is still young and wishes to remarry but that would give her new husband more power than anyone wants to give any man she chooses. Plots, promises and deception are all working behind the scenes and out and about the countryside. Knowing who you can trust may keep you alive so you need to be careful with whatever you do!
This is another outstanding historical novel by Ms. Wine. Her highlanders are not only sexy and hot in their kilts but they have high values and high standards. Her women are not chattel but thinking women who have no trouble expressing their thoughts. They are intelligent and well educated. There is nothing common place or boring in this story!
This is also not your mother’s or grandmother’s historical. There are definitely sex scenes so exciting that they break the bed! No demure, and they closed the door. Instead, you are there as they learn each others bodies. Shocking, I know, but oh so delicious.
Now, I’m not sure what anyone else could want in a historical romance. There are men in kilts, chases through the woods, steamy sex, and devious plots. There is also an unexpected hero which is always awesome. The passion Ms. Wine has for this story comes through her characters in ways you’ll love to read.
Ruined, betrayed, and banished…
As brave as she is impulsive, Deidre Chattan’s tendency to follow her heart and not her head has finally tarnished her reputation beyond repair. But when powerful Highland Laird Quinton Cameron finds her, he could care less about her past—it’s her future he’s about to change forever…
But it’s never too late for redemption…
From the moment Quinton sets eyes on Deidre Chattan, rational thought vanishes, for in her eyes he sees a fiery spirit that matches his own and he’ll be damned if he’ll let such a wild Scottish rose wither under the weight of a nun’s habit…
With nothing left to lose, Deidre and Quinton band together to protect king and crown. But what they can accomplish alone is nothing compared to what they can build with their passion for each other.
