Several hundred years in our future, a future where distant planets have their own civilizations and AI creations are considered heresy, a couple of alien AIs are alive and well. They were created by the Race to protect them and destroy the Confederacy. The Confederacy has been gone for nearly two hundred years and their creators didn’t survive. Now, they are after their own goals and will stop at nothing, including destroying each other.
Mosasa is one of these AI beings. He’s hired mercenaries to travel to the planet Xi Virginis. When they arrive, things aren’t as Mosasa had planned. Xi Virginis is gone. The ship is attacked and escape ships launched. Not everyone ended up together.
His name was Ambrose until he changed it to Adam. Now, he’s ready to take over the world. He has a plan and he’s giving everyone a choice, join him or die. Adam is god but is he fallible?
This is the second book in a series of three. You don’t have to read the first one to enjoy this one. However, most of Mosasa’s story must be in the first book as it isn’t in this one. The books are set up as if you were reading all of them as the table of contents in this book starts with Part Four: Crusade.
Not to panic though as it also has a prologue consisting of 3 chapters. The chapters in this book average about 10 pages which is good as you are jumping from several different scenarios. These scenarios are about different crew members from Mosasa’s ship to the Pope. Yes, everyone gets into the action in this story!
This is an adventure from the first chapter that is set in a sci fi setting. There are gun battles and chases and sabotaged equipment and genetically enhanced fighters. All the good stuff for a fast paced shot them up and let’s get the bad guy story. There’s even a moment when there is an attempt to unite ships from all over the galaxy to fight Adam! Think the classic we know it’s suicide but someone has to do it. Are you with us!
Maybe it’s because there is so much going on or maybe it’s because the chapters are so small but it feels like you’re just breezing through this book. I started reading and the next thing I knew I was ready for the next part! Of course, it could just be that the writing is so good that you become one with the story.
The characters are different. There is an undercover ex-Marine priest as well as a genetically enhanced tiger. As things get rough, many of the characters are forced to take on roles that they never expected to do and aren’t sure they have the skills to do them. But when there’s no one else around, you have to do what you have to do. A few even surprise themselves when they learn how well they can make do!
I would gladly recommend this book to anyone who likes sci fi. There is little of what we call fantasy in it and only a very brief mention of anything that resembles romance but what could happen with science is prevalent and interesting.
The second volume in the long awaited sequel of the Hostile Takeover Trilogy.
After the events of Prophets, the human universe is on the brink of war while, eighty light years away, a being called Adam has arisen to set into motion an attack that has been centuries in the making. Should he succeed, he will rule all of humanity, and all sentient life, as a God.
Only a few know the truth of what is coming. But even with the aid of some unexpected allies, does the human race have any hope of resisting this seemingly omnipresent and omniscient entity?
