Hell Bent

A Broken Magic Novel, #1

This gritty urban fantasy story is a spinoff of Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series. Events from that series are refered to in this one but there is enough backstory that you should be able to follow and enjoy this story without having read the other series.

Shame and Terric are Soul Compliments which means together they can do magic that others can't. The ability to do this kind of magic is extremely rare and most Soul Compliments are also lovers. Shame is so not going there. In fact, Shame and Terric have a love/hate relationship which has them on a roller coaster of emotions and keeps them extremely interesting. However, regardless of how they feel about each other (at any given moment), they agree no one can hurt their friends and family. So, when a mad man from their past makes an appearance threatening them and those they love, they are determined to stop his insanity. Along side this issue is the government wanting to sue Soul Compliments as a weapon. It's open season on them! Plus, Shame has seen a very pretty woman aiming a gun at him. Who is that and who are they working for?

Complex and intense this story drew me in and left me hanging. Of course, that means that it continues in another book, not that this one was lacking anything. Shame and Teric's relationship intrigued me in the last series and I'm thrilled that they now have their own series. They defy rules (usually Shame) and yet they want to do what is right (usually Teric). It's like watching Ying and Yang. They balance each other. However, outside influences such as a gang wanting magic inhanced drugs and unexplained murders have them on edge. This isn't good when each has to control magic within them. Teric has life magic which sounds good but can get out of control as much as Shame's death magic. Don't expect a light happy love story because this isn't it. Do expect the start of a magical war with death, violence and chaos......oh, and a little romance and sex thrown in. Absolutely awesome beginning of a new series that is going to be so easy to be addicted to.
