This is the second book in Ms Bank’s 'Breathless' trilogy. While it would be better to read the first book prior to reading this one, it’s not absolutely necessary. It’s just that the characters are so intertwined and interesting that reading the first book will give you a better understanding of the relationships. Still, this book is awesome all on its own. Ms Banks addresses several serious issues in such a way that you have complete empathy with the characters. Kylie was an abused child and has a lot of fears. Jenson has shadows in his own past that still affect his present. Jenson also is very dominant and has been practicing some BDSM. Kylie doesn’t do well around dominant men and can’t imagine ever agreeing to being tied up! But, these two are drawn to each other. Can they work around the issues that they have? Can trust be built? And, what kind of compromises will they have to make in order for each to feel safe? Some of the answers will surprise you as Kylie and Jenson work through their relationship.
Kylie has always relied on her brother and now that he’s dead, she relies on her two friends. At work, Jenson has taken her brother’s place and Kylie knows that he will do a good job but she doesn’t want to be anywhere around him. He’s too dominant and it scares her. Seeing the fear in Kylie’s eyes upsets Jenson. He never wants to see that look in a woman’s eyes. He’s not sure how to fix it, though, but he’s willing to do anything to have that look gone. Taking it slow is going to require all of his patience because Jenson wants more than just a good work relationship. He wants Kylie in his life. Can she relax enough to even have dinner with him?
In her sensational Breathless Trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks tested the boundaries of desire. In her new trilogy, there’s only one thing left to do: cross them. Now, the story continues as one woman, haunted by the shadows of the past, explores the possibilities of a new beginning in ways she never could have imagined?
Kylie sees the way Jensen looks at her. The dark promise in his eyes. That rough edge of dominance she knows he possesses. But dominance is the one thing that frightens her above all else. She and her brother barely survived a childhood steeped in violence and abuse. She could never give up total control and submit to a man. Especially a man like Jensen. Could she?
Jensen sees the shadows in Kylie’s eyes. Knows he has to tread very carefully or risk losing any chance he has with her. All he wants is the opportunity to show her that dominance doesn’t equal pain, bondage or discipline. That emotional surrender is the most powerful of all, and that to submit fully to him will fulfill the aching void in her heart in a way nothing else ever will.
