First, I love Christine D’Abo’s contemporary stories and couldn’t wait to see how she did steampunk. Let me tell you, she does it well and with her own unique style. This world, though set kind of in historical England, is not like any other steampunk world that I’ve read. It’s much more fantasy than historical. It’s extremely well developed and easy to understand. The characters are interesting and their actions follow the plot well. And, the plot….. While there is a strong romantic element in the story, it’s much more than that. It’s a mystery with an unexpected ending. Jack the Ripper isn’t who you think it is and his reasoning is much different than expected. But, that isn’t the only mystery so don’t think once you’ve figured that part of the story out that you have the end. Not happening! I absolutely loved this story from start to finish and I can’t wait to read more books in this series. There are so many great secondary characters that are just crying out for their own story.
Samuel left the Archivist 5 years ago and has made a life for himself in the King’s Sentry. He’s moving up the ranks and while he doesn’t miss the Archive, he does miss his best friend, Piper. While out on a call concerning the death of a prostitute, Samuel witnesses Pipers first solo memory extraction. A couple of things happen in what should have been a routine extraction. Samuel feels the need to grab Piper and hold her forever and Piper gets the impression that someone at the Archive is behind the murder. Suddenly, things have changed and to learn who is behind what is being to look to be a serial killer Samuel and Piper are going to have to work together and go against all the training of the Archive. People in power will try to stop them, but can they figure it out before it’s too late?
FIRST LOVE IS NEVER FORGOTTEN
Piper Smith is an Archivist, one who extracts memories from the dead-and her first job is more difficult than she ever imagined. Not only is her subject the victim of murder, but the first man to arrive on the scene is the last man she ever expected to see again: handsome, tormented, and devilishly sexy Samuel Hawkins. Years ago, he fled the Archivists' Guild unceremoniously, leaving behind both unanswered questions . . . and Piper's aching heart.
Sergeant Samuel Hawkins of the King's Sentry can hardly believe the strong, beautiful woman before him is the same shy girl he once knew. His instincts scream to hold her, to kiss her, and to make amends for disappearing from the Archives-and her life. Yet when Piper's extraction of the victim's memories reveals something unsettling, the line between ally and enemy suddenly begins to blur. And the question becomes whether their fragile love will blossom or fade like a distant memory.
