Julia Patterson is in the mist of getting a divorce from her abusive husband, getting a business off the ground and being a mother to twins. She is just waiting for Charles, her husband to sign the papers so she would be free, or as free as she could be with Charles making some really outrageous demands as part of the settlement like hosting holiday meals for himself and his parents.
Charles doesn't want this divorce and doesn't plan on signing the papers. He wants Julia back and wants her to quit working and cater to him. He will do anything in his power to make that happen.
Two days before Thanksgiving, Julia flies into Boston to make a presentation for a new account. There she meets Luke Buchanan and finds herself falling in love. They both feel the spark and want to explore where this might go.
As usual, Charles interrupts Julia's happiness. He has a heart attack forcing Julia to return home early. The news gets worse from there. Charles has heart failure and will die in months. Instead of being a time to be free, Charles has wrapped up so many conditions in his will that Julia will never be able to explore what she feels with Luke. Julia is even more torn when she discovers that she's pregnant!
The character of Julia is the only one that is truly developed and explored. Even then, you don't really get a sense of what her life was like prior to Charles but at some point she must have had some kind of backbone because she defied him to start a business. What is explored is a frightened, downtrodden woman who would rather roll over and give up than fight for what she wants and needs. Though Julia thinks she's doing it for her kids, she appears to be doing it because it's the path of the lease resistance or because she puts monetary things before happiness.
Regardless, the sex scenes are awesome and very well done. At first, it appears that this story will have plenty of them as within the first few chapters Julia finds herself in bed with Luke and she has several years of yearning to get over. Unfortunately, then Charles comes back into the picture along with all his strife and discontent.
I'm going to be honest. I really disliked Julia and as this story revolved around her, it made it very hard to get into it. I wanted to reach out and smack her. Even from the grave, she was too wimpy to make a personal life and allowed Charles to continue to dictate how she would live. I have no idea how she helped run and expand a business when she let bullies stomp all over her without a whimper.
The premise of this story thought was great. If I could have liked Julia, I probably would have loved this story. But, I just couldn't get pass Julia as being someone who wanted someone else to fix her problems and being unable to fight for what she wanted. This was more than just a poor little me heroine, this was a let me roll over and let life flatten me until some big strong man fulfills me and makes me happy.
Still, I'm sure others will enjoy this story as it does have some excellent parts.
