Samantha, Sam, Holland is a LT in the Washington DC police department. There she works as a detective. Sam recently got engaged to Nick Cappuano, the junior Senator from VA. As the story begins, they are attending the wedding of Sam's father and his caretaker. Sam's father is a retired DC cop who was shot on duty. He's paralyzed but still loves to be involved with his daughter's life.
While at the wedding, Sam gets a phone call from another Senator. His mistress has been murdered. This simple phone call will start an investigation that will include another murder, a cop being kidnapped and involvement from some of the highest places in the government. Sam will have to watch that she checks everything twice, especially after what happened with her ex-husband, Peter.
Peter was arrested for building bombs and attempting to murder Sam and Nick. But it looks like he's going to get out on a technicality. This really irritates Sam and Nick along with the arresting officers.
Once again, Sam is being threatened as she works through this case. And to add stress to her life, Nick has decided that they will be getting married in 6 weeks! Things are never calm around these two!
This is the third book in this series by Marie Force with the first two being Fatal Affair and Fatal Justice. While you probably could enjoy this book without having read the first two some of the details and motivations may not be as clear as if you had read them. Personally, they are excellent and I'd read them.
Nick and Sam are super characters. They have some traits that are similar as in they don't share what they are thinking and feeling well with each other. They're working on changing that but sometimes they forget which causes some conflict. Both are hard working and dedicated to their beliefs. Each is independent and capable but they are so much more together. They allow themselves to unwind and blend to become a couple.
The police work and the case Sam is working on is done with such detail that you feel as if you are part of the force. Each step is given and why but not in a way that is boring. The jokes and ribbing that the force does is present as is the caring that they have for each other. As one learns in the middle of this big case that he's a father, the others understand his need to take off and don't begrudge covering for him. From foot chases to arrests, you're there.
I love this series. I've gotten so involved with everyone's lives. Things aren't always wonderful and surprises happen but all that is good as they work through their issues with the support of family and friends. This intertwining of lives makes this feel real. After all, we don't live in a vacuum but in a society with daily interaction!
If you like suspense with a touch of romance, this is the book for you. Absolutely kept me glued to the page and I just couldn't put it down. I was so involved with this story that I know I was there at a few of these arrests.
I know I can't wait until the next book in this series comes out. You know if Sam's dad's wedding has chaos, hers should be extremely interesting.
