From the first page until the last this story is action packed and absolutely has your attention. With crimes that reflect today’s society as well as political scandals, things never slow down for Sam and Nick. It is quickly apparent that this book is part of a series but as each book stands alone, start reading. The worse that will happen is you will be drawn into this wonderful series and just have to read the previous books. Sam is a strong woman who wants to stand on her own merits at work. That’s not to say that she isn’t a team player because she is, but she also believes on doing the right thing. She is also very much in love with her husband Nick and their adopted son, Scotty. Nick is equally in love with Sam and Scotty. He has been thrown into the DC political machine and risen quickly to one of the top offices in the country. He, like Sam, wants to do what is right, not what might advance his career. These characters, as well as all the secondary characters, are believable and feel as if they might be someone you know or would want to know. The police work is intense and the political maneuvering is high pressured as Sam and Nick have to make decisions that will not only affect each other but may affect all of DC and even the nation. This is a book that I not only couldn’t put down, I didn’t want it to end.
Sam and Nick are taking a much needed vacation. They just want to reconnect and recharge. Of course, it isn’t just them as they have to take a Secret Service detail and they want to take their family and friends as it’s just as important to spend time with them. Unfortunately, Sam’s vacation is cut short when a drive-by shooting happens and she’s needed at work. The pressure is on to find out who did it and why but before that happens and another shooting does! Nick doesn’t get much more time off either before he’s needing to make decisions that he doesn’t want to make. They will change all of their lives and he’s not wanting to do that yet. As work and family life throw Nick and Sam back into their daily chaos, will they be able to support each other or will this pull them apart?
First the calm. Then the storm…
Escaping DC during the dog days of summer is one of the smartest moves Washington metro police lieutenant Samantha Holland ever made. Beach walks aren’t quite as romantic with the Secret Service in tow, but Sam and her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, cherish the chance to recharge and reconnect—especially with a scandal swirling around the administration.
No sooner are they back home than a fatal drive-by shooting sets the city on edge. The teenage victim is barely older than Sam and Nick’s son, Scotty. As more deaths follow, Sam and her team play beat the clock to stop the ruthless killers. With Nick facing his greatest challenge—one that could drastically change all their lives and even end Sam’s career—will the mounting pressure deepen or damage their bond?
