Enchanting The Lady

The Relics of Merlin, #1

She had to take the test. There was no choice. It was required of her and she knew it. The problem was she didn't inherit any of her parent’s power and she couldn't perform even the simplest spell. Lady Felicity Seymour knew that when she didn't pass her testing, she'd lose her duchy and any hope of a good marriage.
What a way to start a book! This poor heroine was so downtrodden that you felt for her. She really wanted to do what she needed to but couldn't. To top it off, her slightly younger male cousin loved to try to scare her with his magic.
Back at the testing site, which is located in England, Sir Terence Blackwell smells a dark magic, a dark magic that comes from relic-magic. Relic-magic is extremely powerful and had killed his brother. His job is to protect the king from this magic and destroy the relic. The place he smells it the most is around Lady Felicity! Oh, and Sir Terence is only tolerated at court as he is a were beast and not a magical person.
Lady Felicity does fail her test and Sir Terence does find her enchanting. As they work their way through a romance that doesn't seem likely and shouldn't work, the relic-magic keeps popping up.
In truth, the book almost seems like a scavenger hunt through familiar places that aren't quite the same as your use to. It took me a little while to get into the book but once I did I found the story fairly enjoyable. The person that you expect to be the bad guy isn't and the one that is, is almost a surprise.
This book is part of a series called the Relics of Merlin. I don't recall reading any of the other books but I'm going to assume that there are 2 previous books as the relic mentioned in this book is called the third Sir Terence has found. No mention of the other book titles are given though.
If you like romance and fantasy and a bit of historical stories, then you will probably like this book. If you just like straightforward modern books, skip this one.

A duchess under an evil spell... A shape-shifter determined to uncover the secret of it... Enter a Victorian world where magic is real and love is a passionate adventure. In a world where magic ruled everything, Felicity Seymour couldn't perform even the simplest spell. If she didn't pass her testing, she'd lose her duchy--and any hope of marriage. But one man didn't seem to mind her lack of dowry: a darkly delicious baronet who had managed to scare away the rest of London's Society misses. Sir Terence Blackwell knew the enchanting woman before him wasn't entirely without magic. Not only could she completely disarm him with her gorgeous lavendar eyes and frank candor, but his were-lion senses could smell a dark power on her--the same kind of relic magic that had killed his brother. Was she using it herself, or was it being used against her? One needed a husband, and the other needed answers. But only together could they find the strongest magic of all: true love.
