Con & Conjure

Raine Benares, #5

Raine Benares is a seeker which means she can find lost things and people. This requires that she has some magical ability though not as much as she has now. Now, she's attached to a rock, Saghred, a rock that gives her unlimited power and could either get her killed or make her insane. She'd love to get unattached but the only way she's figure out to do that will kill her and she's not ready to die yet! Unfortunately, just about everyone on the island of Mid does want the power that Saghred has for their own selfish reasons, like ruling the world. To get it, they'll need to catch Raine.

Not everyone is after Raine. Her not so respectable family is ready to help keep her safe. The Benares are known to be some of the best thieves in the world and their loyalty to Raine is unwavering. So, with her oldest cousin, Mago working as a banker and a con in place to steal the money the elves plan on using to start their war against the goblins, Raine struggles to stay alive while she tries to help the goblin prince who is working on staging an overthrow of leadership.

Also helping Raine is Mychael, the head of Mid security. They also have a magical bond between them. Mychael is more than he seems and has abilities that Raine is just learning about.

When Mychael is almost killed by a bolt, Raine learns that her ex is in town. This ex isn't just an ex, he's also the most sought after assassin in the land. He doesn't kill unless he's paid to do so though, so who is paying to have Mychael killed? Surely Rache isn't jealous? Raine broke up with him 10 years ago!

This is the fifth book in Lisa Shearin's Raine Benares series. Each book is built on the previous books so to fully understand everything going on, it would be best to start at the beginning. However, she does give some of the background on most of the things going on but no enough to always fully understand the subtle underlying reasons.

As with the previous books, this one starts with action and the action never stops! Raine seems to attract trouble no matter what she does, even when she's trying to do the right things for the right reasons! Though she's saving lives and not sparing herself, this only makes her a hero is some eyes and a criminal in others. Even her attachment to Mychael may not keep her from being arrested. With a price on her head, which isn't anything really new, Raine has to try to stop a war, ruin plots and not use Saghred. This may be more than even Raine is capable of!

Though there is lots of action and lots of strife, there is also bit of humor tucked throughout Raines adventures. Raine gets uncomfortable as she listens through the wall as her ex is doing things he use to do to her while she waits until he's through with her ,male cousin in a cathouse on a bed. How uncomfortable for Raine! How funny for those reading about it! Other similar gems are found throughout this book and each is deviously good.

All of the characters are excellent. Raine, being the main character, is the most developed. However, the rest have enough background information to make them come alive. Some of the background material is found in previous books for some of the characters though and while they have a big role, their character may not feel as well developed as it ought to be if you haven't read previous books.

I love this series and Con and Conjure is an excellent addition to it. There is tons of action and adventure but it also has a bit of romance and humor. I've fallen in love with Raine due to her character being so rich and full of life. The complexities of the world that Ms Shearin has developed are fabulous. This has to be one of the best fantasy series currently on the market and I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys this genre. (And if you don't, give this series a try anyway. It's fantastic!)

Raine Benares is a seeker who finds lost things and people. Ever since the Saghred, a soul-stealing stone that's given her unlimited power, has bonded to her, the goblin king and the elves have wanted to possess its magic themselves. Which means a goblin thief and her ex-fiancé-an elven assassin-are after her. To survive, she'll need the help of her notorious criminal family.
