Catch a Mate or CAM is not a dating service though the name may suggest that. CAM is a service that catchs cheating spouses, lovers, significants located in OK. CAM was started by 3 time married, Anne, and operated by several very beautiful girls. Anne never, ever hires any men.
One of those girls is Jillian Greene. Jillian has been working as bait for 5 years. (Bait-what the girls or guys call themselves when they are out to tempt the mates of those that hired them.) She's talked to Anne several times about either becoming a partner in CAM or to buy it. She has big ideas for the company and can't wait to try them. To Jillian, all men are pigs just to different degrees.
Marcus Brody is one fine looking guy. He's been working as bait for 8 years in TX. Orginally from England, he was brought to the US by his mother at 10. He has his own company in TX but he's looking to expand and Anne is looking to sell. He knows that women have no morals and will go after any good looking guy.
What happens when Jillian and Marcus meet? Pure fun. Neither trusts the other but the attraction is there. Marcus has rules like no dating or what ever with co-workers but it's a little hard to stress that when you're wearing lipstick that matches Jillian's! And for Jillian explaining that Marcus is a transgender cross dresser just trying out the shade raises a few eyebrows among the male bait that Marcus is introducing to CAM.
There are a couple of side stories going on just in case the main story isn't interesting enough. Jillian's best friend, Georgia is going through an identity crisis and Jillian's brother, Brent is trying to figure out how to date Georgia when she won't give him the time of day. Jillian's mom is extremely depressed and won't take her meds but wants to try internet dating! She just doesn't understand when no one responds to her posting immediately.
This is a fun book that explores some serious subjects like suicide, spousal cheating and trust. Ms Showalter doesn't gloss over the heartache of any of the issues but does show ways to deal with them. She does this in a non-judgemental way and even puts some humor in it.
The characters are real. You get a pretty good idea of why they do what they do and what motovates them. Georgia grew up feeling ugly and didn't go on her first date until she was 19. Now, that she's bloomed, are guys attracted to her because of her looks or because of who she is and how can she tell the difference? Jillian's mother tried to kill herself when her father cheated on her, so how can she forgive him?
Once again Ms Showalter has strong women characters who can hold their own. Jillian knows she does her job well. She knows that she can stand on her own two feet and doesn't need a man to do for her. She expresses this to Marcus when he tells her she needs a partner to protect her. Makes life interesting!
I hope some time in the future Ms Showalter gives us some stories about some of the secondary characters in this book. I enjoyed learning about them as much as following the trails and tribulations of the main characters.
Jillian Greene is always getting caught in the act-it's her job! Working at Catch A Mate, Jillian gets paid by suspicious wives to smile, flirt and prove that no man can be trusted around the opposite sex. Her only ground rule? She never gets physical. Until a heart-stoppingly gorgeous male walks in.
Marcus Brody has just been hired as bait to test female fidelity. But the last thing Jillian needs is a partner.especially an infuriating, irresistible man who's got her fantasizing about tearing off his clothes.
Can a savvy modern woman find happiness with the most tempting man she's ever known? Is there such a thing as a totally monogamous male?
