This series is a perfect example of steampunk at its best and Cards and Caravans is a wonderful addition to it. The world is a wonderful blend of Victorian England, magic and steam creations allowing it to cross genres. The characters are a colorful mix of gentry, common folk and those generally seen outside of society. There is even a shape shifter in the mix! Cross country chases, riots, family loyalties and a wedding keep this story interesting and extremely fast paced. It will end well before you’re ready for it to end and leave you wanting to know, what next! I can’t recommend this book and this series enough.
Though this is part of a series, don’t let that stop you from reading this story. The characters from each book shows up in the following books which may be overwhelming at first but they quickly fall into place. Each story can stand alone but the characters are so intriguing that you’ll want to know more about them.
Belinda Danvers married young, left the circus she grew up in and became a farm wife. After her husband dies, she starts sharing creams and simple mixtures with her neighbors to bring in extra money but when chorea breaks out and kills the Alderman’s son, Belinda finds herself behind bars facing execution. Connor McKay is a Knight of the Order of the Round Table. When Belinda’s uncle calls and asks him to check on Belinda, he does so only to find a fast trial and a feeling that something isn’t right. Unable to go through channels to get Belinda out of jail, he stages a jail break and they start a race to the McKay family holdings. Along the way, Connor finds himself attracted to the older widow while Belinda learns that Connor loves another. Is there a way out of this total mess?
Belinda Danvers isn't a witch. But that won't stop them burning her at the stake…
Connor McKay can tell at a glance that Belinda's magickal powers are minimal at best. She can't be guilty of murdering village children. There's something suspicious about her arrest and lightning-quick sentence. Unfortunately, telling anyone how he knows would mean revealing his own powers. He's been sent by the Order of the Round Table to help and he can't just let her die.
Escaping from jail and running from vindictive villagers in her grandfather's steam-powered caravan is more excitement than Belinda's had in years. And despite the danger—or maybe because of it—she loves the time spent with her sexy rescuer. But there's more to his magick than he's letting on…
There's something going on that's bigger than the two of them. It's time for good to make a stand.
