Darkest Risings is a story about brothers who have banded together as hunters in a war against the shadowdrifters…A.K.A Drifters. Each brother must find their life Mate in order to come into their True Blood powers so that they can overtake and win the war against the shadow drifters.
While this book is the fourth in the series it's said to be able to stand alone. I found that reading Darkest Risings as the first book, without any prior knowledge of what was going on, made the book harder to get pulled into. It took about two chapters before I was really pulled in. After that, you finally get some of the background of what is going on, then the story makes more sense and flowed quite nicely. It's a quick read that is quite enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of your seat. After the first two chapters, I think I finished the entire thing in 3 hours; that's how hooked I was.
With all that being said, I would suggest reading the first three books in order. Then read Darkest Risings. It will make the series even more enjoyable. I give Darkest Risings a rating of 3.5, but would have given it a 4 if I had the prelude from the first three books to lead me into it.
