Breath of Fire

The Kingmaker Chronicles, #2

Amanda Bouchet brings us back into her Kingmaker Chronicles with another strong epic fantasy. “Breath of Fire” picks back up not too long after the first book, “A Promise of Fire”, ends. You will need to read book one before continuing the journey in this second book. I do encourage you now to get book one if you haven’t already started the journey. This series is like jumping right into one of those Greek god action movies…but with some added sexy romanceness. Romance readers will love this combo of action and romance and I for one am excited to see more truly immersive fantasy in the romance genre. No one will feel like the Kingmaker Chronicles could be set in the present day or that the world is a repurposed Earth. From the first page readers are immersed into the lives of fabulous characters and a stunningly deadly world. Life is not easy for our heroine, Catalia Fisa…aka Cat. So many people are out to kill her. Luckily the Gods seem to be on her side as well as her band of merry men.

As this second instalment opens things are not so rosy for Cat. Her relationship has hit a rocky patch. It’s so rocky that even I was wondering if things would turn around for Cat and Griffin. Diehard fans might want to get a tissue before jumping into this story. We met Griffin and Cat in the first book. They are both strong, both in mind and physically. They are a couple that fought so hard for what they had, but half-truths have a way of coming between even thoughts who love so hard. But Amanda Bouchet and her trusty pen have found a plausible solution for all of this turmoil. By the end readers will be very happy with where the story goes and what is in the cards for Cat and Griffin.

The story isn’t just about Cat and Griffin. They are not a world unto themselves. These two need help in a world of war, magic and death. Kato, another warrior and friend to both Cat and Griffin, steals the show a bit. When a snake comes after him and he has to take on the job of pleasing a goddess and her worshiper Atlantea he has to show his sexy moves. I’m wondering where his story is going next. Who will tame him?

Overall this story was just phenomenal. The only thing that slowed things down a bit for me was the really long battle scene with the cyclops. I loved all the Greek monsters including the hydra. Oh and I can’t forget to mention the Ipotane, horse people. Plus all the quests really set the whole plot and drew me through the story.

Readers expecting Cat and Griffin to solidify their relationship more will be pleasantly surprised…as will Cat. Miracles are in store and a dynasty is in the cards.
