SUMMARY: (TAKEN FROM THE AUTHOR'S SITE)
The White Oak, Clarendon's oldest brothel, lured and destroyed men by the thousands. Fezariu was different. He had never been drawn by the White Oak's vices but the brothel had still ruined him when he was just a boy. Salvation came in the form of the Merelax Mercenaries - Elenchera's most prestigious hired hands. They gave Fezariu the chance to escape from his past. Immersed in the world of dangerous assignments in the colonies Fezariu longed to forget everything about his childhood but only in facing the past would he ever be free of it.
The unrelenting snow fell between the far-reaching deciduous branches of the vast forest, disguising an already barely discernible path that ran between the trees and into the heart of a steep valley. Amidst the persistent snowflakes and swirling breeze, a cruel game of cat and mouse was drawing to a close.
Fezariu wandered towards the harbour and stopped to admire the series of magnificent vessels anchored in the waters. Their prows were pointed towards the distant horizon, their sails blew gently in the ocean breeze and their hulls creaked faintly with every movement. As Fezariu walked between the vessels he noticed a group of men loading wooden boxes onto a black ship with white sails and headed in their direction. `Excuse me,' Fezariu said, stopping one of the men with a large crate perched awkwardly on one shoulder. `I need to get to Archangel University. Are there any mercenaries here?'
A well written and precisely delivered fantasy novel! When I an excepted this book for review the author made a comment of it taking him ten years to develop that world of Elenchera. His dedication and knowledge of the written word is evident within the pages of this book.
Within a short time after beginning the book I was pulled in by the author's unique voice and storytelling. First, we meet Fezariu's mother and live her tale from conception till birth of Fezariu and on until her tainted past catches up with her. Without giving spoilers, Fezariu is forced to grow up fast in a world that has no tolerance for weakness. Midway through the first half of the book the story turns focus from Fezariu's upbringing and onto Fezariu and his life as he lived it. For a boy that has suffered so much in a short time he is surprisingly just, with a strong sense of morals guiding him, however, for me, we really start to get a more focused look into Fezariu's world and life at the end of chapter fifteen. It's when the excitement takes off!
Fezariu has entered the world of the Merelax Mercenaries and from there his adventure in life's lessons put him to the test time after time. Through battles and camaraderie he lives to learn and become the better man he believes he can be. A true character to take direction from. We learn of his weaknesses as well. And right along side him see the strength he possesses to pull himself up from his mistakes and continue on. While this story has many levels of happiness and accomplishments, and even though tainted with the cruelness fate can deliver, there is a tender story of family and devotion at the core. through smooth prose and elegantly placed details the author delivered a wonderful fantasy novel ending on a note true to the genre. The epilogue serves as a small glimpse of what lies in store for fans in the second installment of the Elenchera series.
Fezariu's Epiphany leads a reader into a world of a different time and place compared to our own. Set thousands of years in the future you can still appreciate the old world vibe as well as the new world vibe through the author's close attention to detail. This gives the story an anchor for the reader to ground themselves with when imagining the story as it happens.
David Brown writes with a elegant hand and close attention to the minute details of the story. The details that open a readers imagination into another time and place. David Brown is a true fantasy writer that knows the genre well.
When a reader that normally does not like fantasy novels set in world with unknown names falls in love with a book from that genre, then you know the author did a spectacular job of bringing their story to life for all to enjoy. I am that reader that does not normally like fantasy novels and for one to have me sit down and read it from cover to cover says a lot about the book and the author. I highly recommend this book to readers of all genres. This story is not so much about the world it takes place in but the ties that pull human kind together and even what breaks us apart. David Brown took his time and and in doing so delivered a book worth my time!
