Death's Sweet Embrace

SUMMARY: (blurb taken from the author's site)

After thousands of years of secret conflict, humans and parahumans have reached an uneasy truce. But unspeakable evil now threatens to shatter the tenuous peace.

Teenaged shapeshifters are being slaughtered by a twisted, sadistic serial killer who rips their still-beating hearts from their paralyzed bodies. A task force must be formed to halt the madness—a union of avengers including the vampiric Aeternus, Christian Laroque and Antoinette Petrescu, as well as Kitt Jordan and Raven Matokwe, members of enemy Animalian tribes…and forbidden lovers.

A centuries-old blood feud has divided their peoples—pitting wolf against snow leopard in a battle to the death—and if their passion is discovered it will doom them both. But past hostilities must be put aside in light of the scourge that is now upon them. For the killer they seek is but the first sign of a blossoming terror rising up from their long-buried pasts: the all-consuming nightmare of The Dark Brethren.

FIRST LINE:

The excited babble of the female voices floated down the hall toward Gideon.

PLOT:

Much to my satisfaction Death's Sweet Embrace was an excellent addition to the Dark Brethren Series. Filled with action, adventure, family betrayals and broken hearts, Ms. O'Hara weaved a stunning tale of everything Urban fantasy is made of while adding a love story that pulled at my heart. After reading the first installment, Night's Cold Kiss, and the fabulous story of Antoinette and Christian, I was a little shocked to discover the second book featured a new heroine and hero, however, I was not disappointed! Ms. O'Hara has an ability for adding just enough detail to keep you reading, searching for the answers to your questions which are expertly sprinkled throughout the entire story. She also did a great job of adding depth to her series with all her bold world building and gritty characters. With all the multiple threads and action driven suspense, there was not one minute I didn't wish I already had the next installment ready in line. The author delivered a story with all the right amounts of suspense, action and love with a happy ending by the end, leaving enough of an opening for the next book. The one thing I do have to add is that the first book is a must read in order to fully enjoy the second book.

SETTING:

Death's Sweet Embrace takes place in a present day urban setting with a brief detour to the Pride Lands, where Kitts pack resides.

WRITING:

Tracey O'Hara has a smooth hand that allows you to glide from one POV (point of view) to another fluidly. Her prose is witty and sharp with just the right amount of grit that adds a depth to her work. The only compliant I have about the writer's style is her tendency to repeat certain details within a short amount of space.

CHARACTERS:

Tracey O'Hara isn't afraid to add a depth to her characters that set them apart from your average hero and heroine. Her stories are rich with a different breed of vampire, were-tigers, were-lions, and one sexy-as-hell wolf shifter. Although her story is told in multiple third person, the protagonists of the story are Raven, a wolf shifter and Kitt a snow leopard-shifter felion, belonging to the Animalian group.
Raven and Kitt struggle with an emotional tug of war within while they struggle to contain their obvious lust for one another. The tension between the two is thick and held me spellbound until the end.

While I was completely consumed with Raven and Kitt, I couldn't help wonder what would become of Antoinette and Christian. I hope to see more of them in the next book and I can only hope the were-tiger twins get there own story too!

LAST THOUGHTS:

Thick with action, passion, some country line dancing and an unforgettable villain, Death's Sweet Embrace is a must read for all Urban Fantasy/Paranormal lovers. I hope the thrill ride doesn't end here, because I want more of Tracey O'Hara and her Dark Brethren Series!
