Dark is the Night

Dark Justice, #1

SUMMARY:(taken from the author's site)

Katherine Wells is Cleveland's top homicide detective and she's hot on the trail of the Antoinette killer. The string of burnt and beheaded bodies have little in common, except they keep turning up. In search of clues, she encounters Alexander. His intoxicating old world persona captivates her and she suddenly finds herself in a torrid love affair. The passion is overwhelming and her sense of law falls into blissful chaos.

As an elder vampire, Alexander struggles for anonymity in the modern world. Killing isn't personal; it's to prevent them from becoming the undead. His kind can't be discovered. With Katherine's investigation getting too close to the truth, the other vampires demand he eliminate Detective Wells.

Katherine discovers Alexander's supernatural secret and he learns Katherine's the detective he must silence. The revelations are shocking. He's everything she ever wanted and everything she stood against. Torn between a love like no other and the law she's sworn to uphold, she must choose. Against time, the police and the other vampires, they must destroy the evidence she's collected and join the undead.

FAVORITE LINE:

"Dark is the night, my love," I said, taking his hand and hefted him to his feet and slipped into his arms.

TEASER:

I would bet I was the only cop in the world who ever had to race across town in lingerie to stop a vampire, who happened to be their lover, from killing the hacker they had contracted to hack the FBI files of evidence that might lead someone to that very same vampire. Say that again without taking a breath.

PLOT:

Brindle Chase has brought back the Vampires of old in his Dark Is The Night; a dark paranormal romance that takes Vampires back to their roots, delivering a true horror story yet within the parameters of a romance I believe all lovers of the genre will appreciate and love. I have to say I went into this story expecting the usual vampire/human romance and was wildly blown away with the twist and turns the story took. The romantic bond between the main characters thrived throughout the entire book. The love scenes so vivid that every emotion vibrated right off the page. And in equal measurement the suspense of the story shot my heart rate up time and time again that no doubt could have drawn any vampire within a five mile radius to my front door step!

There were some instances that almost had me withdraw from the story because I was unable to understand the hero's actions, however the author did not leave me handing and went on to show me the inner thoughts of the elder vampire. As the reader, I was also previed to the deepest thoughts of the heroine, Katherine. With the story being told in first person between the two there was no room left for doubt and a solid paranormal romance came together sentence after sentence that left me wanting to know when the next installment would be available. The depth of character and story entranced my mind and by the end I understood both characters thoroughly.

SETTING:

Dark Is The Night takes place in the urban setting of Cleveland.

WRITING:

Brindle Chase writes with smooth prose and an imagination filled with wonderful surprises. He provides great insight into his characters and never leaves the reader with a bad cliffhanger. This last observation is well appreciated might I add. His ability to edit and provide clean books with proper grammar is recognized as well.

CHARACTERS:

Katherine Wells, a self dependent and take no bullshit from anyone lead detective for the Cleveland PD, came across as a tough woman that didn't have a problem with taking down the bad guys and going home afterwards to nothing but Mr. Purple and whatever she could find in the cabinets to eat. She is a woman that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to reach out and take it. Her morals guided her in her decisions yet she also learns other boundaries and just how far she would go for the one she loved. What makes her someone worth my compassion is her ability to see deep within the vampire's heart and see the man and not the beast. This is what attracted me to her character and made me stop and think about how much we as humans judge others before understanding the reasons behind the actions. And her wit definitely had me laughing out loud a few times earning me quite a few glances at the coffee shoppe.

Alexander, an elder vampire over a thousand years old, was a difficult man to understand at first. His thoughts and reasoning are shown to use piece by piece like a good mystery coming together by the end. Although he acts upon his true nature his reasonings behind each action are just and of a chivalrous basis. And I must say after understanding him I fell all to easily for his charms and romantic heart right along with each sweet caress or kiss he bathed Katherine with.

LAST THOUGHTS:

I have read two books by this author and on both accounts I have not been disappointed! And I must say I absolutely loved the theme of this novel - how far would you go for the one you love.

Dark Is The Night took me out of my normal reading pattern and gave me something I didn't even know I wanted. Its deep passion and edgy grit delivered a story I won't soon forget. I look forward to reading the second installment and I know I will devour it as fast as I did this book!
