Secret Sisters

You can guess from the title that at the core of the newest crime novel by Jayne Ann Krentz are SECRET SISTERS and I can honestly say you would be correct in that assumption. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of that guess. There is nothing simple in SECRET SISTERS. Jayne Ann Krentz has once again fashioned a tale with many layers, many suspicions and may I suggest that the spider web reaches far and wide. Krentz provides hints and clues along the way – as is her style but beware. SECRET SISTERS once again reminds us that Krentz is a master at dropping clues at random places – some obvious and others well obviously not so. In fact SECRET SISTERS is ripe with facts that the inexperienced Krentz reader might just gloss over – but her fans know better. Nothing in SECRET SISTERS is superfluous. And that my friends is the biggest and best clue I will impart.

Once upon a time there were two very close friends that were as they say now a days BFF. Tragically their closeness was going to come to an abrupt end when they were about twelve. Evil visited their little town and targeted these two girls forever changing their lives and candidly their families as well. You see evil has tendrils that easily escape from the binds and before you know it the path of destruction is quite vast. Never more so than in SECRET SISTERS by Jayne Ann Krentz.

Madeline Chase was left with many trust and intimacy issues since that night at the Aurora Point Hotel in Cooper Island. Many would have thought left and buried when Madeline and her grandmother moved away to Sanctuary Creek and built a small hotel chain called Sanctuary Creek Inns. Aurora Point Hotel was basically abandoned with the exception of Tom Lomax who became the resident caretaker and town hoarder. It was Tom that summoned Madeline back to the island.

Madeline didn’t go alone. She brought with her the security expert hired by her now deceased grandmother Edith. Jack Rayner was previously FBI equipped to handle much more than hotel security – luckily for Madeline. Neither Jack nor Madeline could ever guess what they were going to discover back on Cooper Island. Evil still resided in Cooper Island carefully disguised as shall we say normal.

Nothing was normal about the Webster family. This family had spent all its life sheltering a very troubled son. The town of Cooper Island was frightened by Xavier Webster with good reason. Xavier was in and out of institutional care for most of his life. When he was sent away the town basically took a deep breath of relief.

Jack Rayner was famous for saying “a secret isn’t a secret if more than one person knows it.” In SECRET SISTERS Jayne Ann Krentz opens the proverbial can of worms and it appears to be bottomless.

Now you may be saying – wow – that’s a pretty clear synopsis of this book. Not even close. Each and every page will challenge the best armchair detective. With each page SECRET SISTERS appears to get clearer but believe me when I say that is deceiving – this story actually gets murkier – delightedly so in my humble opinion.

As a reviewer I get to preview many great books and SECRET SISTERS is heading right to the top of that list. I am a longtime fan of Jayne Ann Krentz and SECRET SISTERS just reminded me why. With many twists and turns this page turner captures your interest and heart from the get-go.
