One Texas Night

Jodi Thomas knows Texas, cowboys, ranchers and the women who are tough enough to survive harsh conditions, without many luxuries and yet are soft enough to care for their rough and tough men. So in ONE TEXAS NIGHT Thomas treats us to four novellas between two covers. Sort and sweet, well not necessarily that sweet but short enough to call them novellas but long enough to tell a marvelous tale. If you've heard the expression worth their weight in salt then you will understand how delightful this book is and if you are looking to give Jodi Thomas a try this is the book for you.

Personally I'm an official member of the Thomas fan club. My eyes are always on the lookout for a newly published work by this tried and true author. So you can only imagine how lucky I felt when I came across this lovely collection of stories.

In the first story Hank Harris figured he had nothing to lose stopping over at the Tucker's to meet the single woman visiting. At least he knew he would get a home cooked meal. As it turned out the meal was barely edible but the tastiest morsel of the evening was Aggie herself. As the youngest of three sisters she was kind of being shopped around by her sisters and father. They were looking to unload this petite woman who just didn't seem to be marriage material. Strangely Aggie was possibly the best looking one of the bunch but shy around strangers and not too keen on giving up control to anyone much less a stranger who might want to become her husband. Having spent most of her life with her gunsmith father she favored working with arms rather than anything even remotely domestic.

Meeting Hank was fate. Here was the one person who seemed to understand her desire for independence and respect her skills. Theirs was to be an unexpected choice as relationships go but they were both getting what they needed in this so called partnership. Instead of a usual proposal with hearts and flowers, which definitely wasn’t Hanks style, he offered her his gun belt, gun and all. If he didn't keep his word she now had the ability to keep him in line. Now just how could a woman turn down that kind of marriage proposal. It could only get more interesting.

The following three stories are just as rich and each one could easier be the prequel to dozens of Thomas tales. You will meet a down-on-his-luck cowboy who decides to try his luck at a rodeo. The expected prize would afford him choices he never had before, but the best prize is totally unexpected. In saving a woman from having her life dictated beyond her control and desire this cowboy will in fact save his own. Then we move on to a slightly nutty girl who drives a bargain with a man who is not only a complete stranger but for all practical purposes an outlaw. His intentions seemed to be to rob her ranch, along with his merry group of men, and that is why he hiding out in the church. But things aren’t always as they seem. Both this hapless cowboy and this somewhat unpredictable woman all dressed in white are going to learn an important lesson – don’t judge a book by its cover. The last story is about an angel – no not really. It’s about a military nurse who has seen her share of the walking wounded. As luck would have it her stagecoach runs into bad luck on her way to join her brother the doctor on a military camp. On board is a ranger on a mission of his own. However there is no way he can abandon this woman who caught his eye from the beginning of their albeit short voyage. Here is a woman who deserves to be cherished and yet he is delivering her to a brother who is decidedly less than gracious. Could it be the time to hang up his guns and follow his heart?

This review is purposely written as a tease to provide a glimpse into the lovely tales included in this collection of novellas. Each story definitely stands on its own and is very satisfying and entertaining. Sometimes you just want to grab a quick read and this is it. Great beach read.
