It was like coming back home to good friends that I didn't even realize I had missed. That's the talent of Jill Gregory. She brings her characters to life and they are so memorable that when you start reading the next book you have to smile as you recognize these wonderful people from the past. Blackbird Lake is part of Gregory’s Lonesome Way Novel series. But you truly don't have to have read the previous installments to be instantly enmeshed in this lovely new story. The writing is witty and endearing at the same time and this is one book you will not want to put down. Just a charming tale with the right amount of angst to keep you on your toes. The recipe has been tried and true and Blackbird Lake is just plain yummy.
Here's the scoop, a one night stand and an oops. The oops is an adorable toddler named Emma. Emma is the light of her single mother Carly's life. So much so that Carly uproots herself leaving behind a successful career and job to settle in Lonesome Way. Here is a place that holds a special place in Carly's heart from her childhood. A safe small town filled in abundance with people who care. People who were so willing to accept this single mother and child. A place now filled with friends who could almost be considered extended family. A great portion of Carly’s childhood had been a nightmare of moving from relative to relative and winding up in the foster child program. Definitely not what she wanted for her daughter and so she would do all she could to cement their existence in this practically idyllic place.
Emma and Carly have settled into their home and town with a stable life style that suited them both. All their needs are met. But there is a little issue that may at some time have to be addressed. You see Emma's father’s family is firmly entrenched in this town. Carly knew that before moving there permanently but counted on the fact that the man who sired Emma competes in rodeos full time. His work keeps him on the road all year long with just short random visits to his hometown. This seemed manageable. It would just take a little work but in the end it was well worth it since this was the most idea place for Carly and her Emma.
Strange how simple can leap to complicated in just a blink.
Jake arrives home for a family birthday and never expected to run into this woman who had caught his eye several years ago. Heck that had been a very memorable one time encounter that was a regretful moment in his life bringing to the surface the inability to settle down even in light of a real strong attraction. But that attraction was still as strong as ever and now he gets the surprise of his life. He has a daughter. There was no denying that family was very important to Jake and he is instantly in love with this little girl. But he also knows his life is still very nomadic. The problem is how to become a part of Emma’s life. Carly is also concerned with just what role Jake can play in her daughter’s life. She certainly worries over repeating her history with an absentee father. That’s why she never contacted Jake when she learned she was expecting. Jake had been clear. He wasn’t in it for the long haul. And Carly couldn’t take a chance that either Emma or she would become attached to this man.
Life is complicated – but love can definitely smooth the way. Blackbird Lake actually treats us to several love stories. I am confident you will adore each and every one.
