Fans of classic westerns like How the West Was Won (one of my personal favorites) and Paint Your Wagon are going to be enthralled with the latest installment in the Harmony novels by Jodi Thomas. Curiously A PLACE CALLED HARMONY is actually the precursor to all the fabulous tales of this one time little town called Harmony. In A PLACE CALLED HARMONY Jodi Thomas takes us on a wondrous and sometimes arduous journey into the past where we are treated to a birds-eye view of how it all began.
A PLACE CALLED HARMONY is a classic example of timeless stories centering on the brave folks that tamed the west. It is a look at dreams, hopes, love and community. Harmon Ely’s dream of a town is a huge undertaking but step by step – person by person – his town is beginning to take shape.
It’s a rather odd mix of people who answer Harmon’s ad and each has specifics reasons for packing up their old lives and setting out to a rough, untamed and rather lonely part of the country. Jodi Thomas introduces the original settlers to what ultimately is an ongoing saga complete with ranchers, lawmen, shopkeepers and families brave enough to tackle some very unique challenges.
The one thing you can count on is that Jodi Thomas stays true to the times she writes about. Hard times can defeat a person or help develop inner strengths. So in A PLACE CALLED HARMONY we have three couples/families heading toward a better future. It’s definitely not an easy route but for these people it’s the chance to have a real home with land they can develop and settle in for many generations to come. Each settler is going to build what will become a legacy for their family.
Pretty soon these people capture your heart as you delight in watching them become a community driven by their mutual desire to build a town. All and all it’s a wonderful look into a life pretty foreign to most of us and yet so fascinating a romance with western life.
The west was filled with people looking for a new start – perhaps life had handed them a rocky beginning. Some needed a chance – a change – a safe place to land. Harmony looked like just such a place – a diamond in a rough and these original settlers had the opportunity to mold this town to their visions. Harmon Ely opened the door – the rest was up to them.
Welcome to the people who made Harmony the place of dreams and possibilities for generations to come.
Welcome to the Matheson’s, McAllen’s and Truman’s who took a giant leap of faith – left their families and homes – and took the chance of a lifetime – a huge gamble that paid off.
First let me state plainly that I am a huge fan of Jodi Thomas’s books. Thomas’s series set in Harmony has given me many moments of enjoyment. Each book leaves me waiting for the next story of characters who have seemingly grown up right before my eyes. A PLACE CALLED HARMONY is another additional to an already long list of favorites by this very talented, imaginative and honest writer. Thomas never disappoints her long-time fans and A PLACE CALLED HARMONY is sure to garner a whole new group of followers. Upon finishing A PLACE CALLED HARMONY I gathered up all my Harmony books to be read still again. Now that I knew the beginning I wanted to revisit where they all wound up. Absolutely fascinating.
