What an incredibly haunting tale (No pun intended) of three young couples - bound by fate and destroyed by deception - that spans eight centuries from the Atlantic shores of Ireland to the banks of the Delaware river in American.
Noah Chase grew up in the shadow of Campbell's Foley - a twelfth century Irish castle transported stone by stone and erected in the 1930's on the banks of the Delaware river - and has always known it was haunted. As a child he was ostracized by the locals, as an adult he lost his fianc‚e over it, but now he's returned to restore the old castle and has hired an historian/photographer to document the process.
Lilly Briton escaped an extremely abusive relationship, one she fell into in the wake of her parent's brutal murders the year she turned eighteen. Now she's determined to stand on her own, and has serious trust issues when it comes to men. Yet, the moment she meets Noah she's instantly attracted to him.
Noah is relieved to discover Lilly sees and hears the ghosts too because there's something special about Lilly and he's determined to discover everything he can about her.
Together Lilly and Noah research the history of Campbell's Foley, which leads them on a history chase through Ireland. This tale blends the love of a 13th century English Knight, Sir Guy and his wife, Irish Princess, Maruin; and Depression era blue collar worker, Duncan Campbell, and society daughter Amelia. The four ghosts that haunt Campbell's Foley.
The author did a superb job blending past with present, entwining three tragically beautiful love stories full of twists and turns, secrets and deceptions into one incredible tale of love found and lost, forever bound to echo in the stones of Castle Challon.
The downside? The formatting felt awkward and as much as I loved the story there was just enough of something missing -not that I can precisely put a finger on it, perhaps it's the historical facts - to keep this from being a five-star review. Yet, when all is said and done, I highly recommend this book.
I look forward to a possible sequel.
