Belen McLaine has walked this earth for two millennia embracing his dark side, after watching his demon father murder his newborn sister and mother. His sole goal: To kill the demon that sired him and his remaining siblings. And while he’s waiting he uses his power to be that little devil on your shoulder extracting some fun by manipulating humans along the way. However, it backfires on him one night and nearly destroys the one sentient creature, outside of family, that has ever mattered to him.
Faith Winters is a social worker, used to working with troubled teens. Two years ago she ran into Belen while working with street kids and after one passionate kiss she’s been unable to forget about him. In fact she’s craved him as if he were a container of triple-fudge-chunky-chocolate-chip ice cream with a magic spell to make it calorieless.
From the beginning Belen has seen the good in Faith and he fears it as much as he covets it. But when Faith is attacked, beaten and nearly raped, Belen rescues her and sets off a chain of events that will lead to the destruction of one of them. Its pre-ordaned, a horrible imprecation that says he must kill the one he loves or die himself.
Unless… unless he breaks the curse. But the only way for him to do that is locate the spell and die himself. If the Ancestors deem his future worth greater than his past evil he will be allowed to return as a mortal. If not he’s to remain dead. Or, he can just kill Faith and remain immortal forever, something he’s embraced for so long he barely remembers a time of hopes and dreams.
But this is his Faith, and the thought of destroying something so precious breaks a heart he didn’t know existed, even as it unleashes a demon inside him that just doesn’t give a damn. And so it’s a race to the finish between Belen’s good and evil and the will of his Ancestors to overthrow the curse or embrace it.
Ms. Ashgrove has an amazing talent to make your heart break for the tortured souls in her books, be they an injured soldier or an imprecated half-demon. The women are strong, and supportive with an air of vulnerability that still calls to the alpha-male in her tortured souls making the men as irresistible to us as the their women are to them.
Destined to Die is clearly another success by Ms. Ashgrove.
Haunted by his mother's betrayal, Belen McLaine surrendered to his demonic half long ago. For centuries, he's roamed, doing all he can to corrupt those he encounters. But Belen's life changes when a little Yuletide fun goes wrong, and the one woman he can't stay away from is suddenly in need of his protection. Unable to cast her aside, he finds himself on a deadly path to love.
The one date Faith Winters shared with Belen was laden with fireworks, but he stayed away until the night of her brutal attack. As danger escalates, he becomes her only safety and shared passion gives way to something deeper, hotter, than she's ever known before. Yet Faith has no idea her greatest threat is the very man who holds her heart.
For Belen, even if it means hurting Faith, he must not succumb to love. If he fails, his father's curse promises he'll take Faith's life.
