Wendy Everly remembers her sixth birthday very well, but not for presents, balloons or even a pony ride or two, no that was the birthday where her mother tried to kill her by trying to stab her with a kitchen knife while screaming about her being a monster and not her child.
You see, all through the pregnancy everyone though the baby was a boy and then to have a girl, her mother couldn't accept that everyone could have been wrong. That was the time her mother was committed to a psychiatric hospital and Wendy and her older brother Matt went to live with their aunt who was their father's sister.
Her aunt and brother treated her like she was family, and she never had cause to believe she wasn't really their family. She loved them very much and they loved her and took care of her. However, somewhere deep inside she sensed she was different. She didn't fit in with other kids her age. She ends up getting into trouble all of the time and the family has to move around a lot so she can go to different schools so she ends up having no close friends, and she is okay with that as she is kind of a loaner.
She notices sometimes that she can make people do things that she wants them to do just by thinking and concentrating really hard on it. She figures maybe everyone can do this and she doesn't try to do it very often though as she doesn't want to be a freak or anything.
Then when she becomes 17 she notices a boy named Finn in her school who is in some of the same classes as her keeps staring at her a lot. It just creeps her out. She finally confronts him about why he keeps staring so much and he just gives her a flippant answer about how everyone looks at her and not really answering her question at all.
After some time goes by, he finally comes clean with her and tells he was actually sent to find her by her real mother. He tells her she is a changeling, a troll or Trylle as their clan is called, and she is not even human at all. He tells her when she was born she was changed with a human infant child. Now Finn tells her he is taking her to meet her real mother and to live with her real family. The only thing is, she finds she ends up liking her birth mother a lot less than her human mother, if that was possible. She finds out there is a deviousness of why changelings happen. She doesn't agree with how her people do things at all, but on the upside she does finally get some friends that she really relates to.
Now Wendy is back with her real family and smack in the center of a feud with other trolls who want to destroy the Trylle. So can she help save this birth family who she barely knows and the new friends she has made here in this strange place? Or will all of the Trylle, herself included, be destroyed? And what is going to happen with her human family? You will have to keep reading to find out.
For me, this book was a little slow to catch my attention. I wasn't sure if I was really going to enjoy it as I don't get into fairy tales too much, but after a few chapters I was really into it and continued to be in that world until the very end of the book. I can't wait for the next one and will definitely be looking for it. I found this book well written, the characters were believable, and the settings very descriptive and really drew you into that world. I think anyone who is into fantasy or paranormal books should definitely give this book a chance, you just might find a new author who you really like.
