Nicki Beckett is just an average girl who was having some trouble with her boyfriend and she meets a guy named Cole who just happens to be an immortal, who seems too good to be true. When he tells her that he could take all of her pain and suffering away, she was so depressed that she decided that she didn't want to live like this anymore and agrees to go with him and let him take her pain away.

Nicki ends up sucked into the Everneath, or underworld in order to be a forfeit and feed an immortal, namely Cole.

She is a forfeit for 100 years feeding Cole, when she awakens she feels empty of everything. It is some kind of miracle that she survived and it didn't age her severely.

Now she has a choice to go directly to the tunnels which is pretty much end game, or she has a chance to go back topside and have 6 months to try to say goodbye and tie up all loose ends and try to get her family to come to terms with her leaving, and this time it will be forever. As once her 6 months are over the shades will come for her to take her to the tunnels where there is no returning.

It was hard coming back after 100 years in the Everneath, although it was not that long topside, as she is still in high school, which is bad enough but having your father and friends think that you got into drugs and that is why you left, and finding out that after all of this time you still have feelings for your old boyfriend Jack, that is even harder.

Now as the days go by she slowly starts to realize that she doesn't really want to go to the tunnels, but doesn't think she has a choice. To make matters even worse, Cole has followed her topside and tries to change her mind at every turn to not go to the tunnels but come back to the Everneath as his queen and help him rule.

Now as her time is coming to an end, she and Jack are pretty close again, and then as the shades come to collect her, Jack makes the ultimate sacrifice for her. Now what is she going to do? Can she be Jack's savior like he was for her? Or will he be lost to her forever now? You will have to read to find out.

I liked this book. It was different than what I have read before, but I think that is what kept it interesting for me. This author definitely knows how to hook you and reel you in slowly. Good overall read.
