The Alchemist in the Shadows

The Alchemist in the Shadow by Pierre Pevel is the sequel to The Cardinal's Blades and starts a few weeks immediately after the first novel. The year is 1633, in a Paris where dragons menace the realms, and Cardinal Richelieu knows France is in danger. A dark society known as the Black Claw is making moves against the Cardinal and he is going to have to use the Cardinal's Blades to stop them. The Cardinal's Blades are made of six men and women led by Captain la Fargue who are going to have to risk their lives to save France. In exchange for protection, an Italian spy offers vital information for there is a dangerous enemy that has eluded everyone so far. She can name the mysterious Alchemist.

The story is filled with court intrigue, politics and schemes that is complicated even more that magic is in play. The sequel is even better and the characters and political games seem even more complex. This novel is for those who love historical period fantasy that has plenty of sword fights, magic, and thrills. The main strength is the characters and the plot is very satisfying. The only weakness I would warn is that you do need to read the first book as the reader is going right into the world. I enjoyed the first book, but the sequel is even stronger in my opinion. I would rate it five stars as it is going on my keeper shelf.
