“When She Said I Do” is one of those books that sneaks up on you. When Callie and her family seek refuge from a storm in Ren Porter’s home, you wonder just how Callie is going to put up with Ren after the way their relationship started. But Celeste Bradley develops the story in such a way that the reader builds their relationship with Ren and Callie the same way the characters built it with each other....slowly and over time. It’s an enjoyable read with two characters that will absolutely grow on you. I look forward to more of the Worthington family.
When Calliope Worthington and her family have a carriage accident and seek refuge in an apparently abandoned estate, none of them realized that Callie’s midnight wandering would result in Callie entering into an arrangement with the owner of the house, Ren Porter, after damaging a string of pearls. But that arrangement awakens a passion in Callie and Ren that neither of them can deny...even if their life depends on it.
Callie comes from a large boisterous family where she often times plays caretaker to all eight of her siblings. She longs for time to herself where she can do what she wants when she wants without worrying about being interrupted. When she agrees to enter into an arrangement, it’s more because she sees it as a way to have some time to herself than saving her brother from the results of a duel. Callie discovers that besides longing for her freedom, she also longs for the passion that Ren unleashes on her as well as to learn just who the man is that she’s married to.
Ren is a man who has been beaten down by betrayal. Left for dead by the organization he thought of as family, he has spent the past three years waiting to die. But with Callie, her soul speaks to the man he was before the betrayal and makes him want to be happy again. It takes a bit for Ren to let go of the masks he hid behind for so long, but he realizes that he would do just about anything for Callie, include letting everyone see the man he is now.
Caught in a rainstorm, Miss Calliope Worthington takes shelter in a seemingly abandoned mansion. But when she finds a string of pearls in a dusty chest, she is caught red-handed by the house’s reclusive owner—Mr. Ren Porter—a fiery demon of a man who demands that Callie pay for the necklace…with her innocence.
When he first lays eyes on the beautiful trespasser, Ren mistakes her for an angel. But when he realizes Callie is a thief, he strikes a bargain she cannot refuse. She must take his hand in marriage and pay him back in full: one night of passion for each stolen pearl. But when Callie surrenders to his desires—night after wicked night—he awakens something deep inside of her. Something powerful and passionate. Like a fairy tale come true, the monster she married has become the man she loves…when she said I do.
