Claire Brennan is tired of packing up and moving every couple of years. She's found a place where she's comfortable at Emerson Academy, has made good friends in Erica and Brian and even has a crush on school hottie, Neil. When she starts having weird psychic moments after touching someone she keeps this information from her mother, positive this would send her mother into a packing fit and Claire enrolling in a new school just as this school year has started.

Alec Mackenzie is tired of his job as a Watcher within the Grigori. All he wants is to live a normal life and live in the obscurity of the human world. He finds Emerson Academy and figures this is a good place to start his new life. He never expects to be found by his Godfather Vincent or put back into the roll he so desperately wanted out of and find the Awakened individual that is at Emerson Academy.

Alec soon learns that the Awakened is actual Claire, the girl he met on his first day of school and the one that he wants despite the entire obstacle. But while he tries to hide what he is from Claire, she's contacted psychically by another Grigori and demands to know exactly what's happening with her. Alec vows to protect her from any evil that may be lurking around the corner, but can he keep that vow if he's forced to leave her in the name of protection?

Claire was a character you really want to connect with, but at times was left wondering why she acted the way she did. She seemed like such a level headed person and such a normal teenager that I was a bit surprised that she wasn't a little more freaked out over the rise of her Nephilim powers or when she learned someone was out to kill her.

Alec was one of those silent, brooding characters with a great accent that many of us love. But something was a bit off with him to the point that I personally couldn't connect with him no matter how much I wanted to. I had the expectation that he should act like the adult he was (being over 100) rather than a typical teenage boy.

The secondary characters in the story were great. Erica, Brian and even Neil bring a witty element to the story that keeps your attention. At times they were more interesting than Claire and Alec.

This was an entertaining read, with a great premise of a storyline but at times the twist and turns the story took left me wondering if I was really out of touch with teenagers because they certainly were dealing with the issues in the story much better than I would have at that age.
