ROOMIES is a standalone novel by the the amazing duo Christina Lauren. I have read nearly everything by Christina Lauren so I'm always a little apprehensive going into one of their new releases, because I never believe I can love the next book they write like I do the one I read previously.
The beginning of ROOMIES was hard for me to get in to. I thought for sure I wouldn't love this book. Usually romances really focus on the relationship between the love interests, and that can start on page one. It took a little while for ROOMIES to set up a relationship between Calvin and Holland.
I related to Holland on a molecular level. Have you ever read about a main character and not only did you relate to their situation, but you actually felt like they were written about you? I felt that way with Holland. She was going through a lot of the same things I have been going through lately, and her story gave me hope! Holland is supremely talented, and she just needed to believe what everyone already knew about her.
Holland has an MFA in Creative Writing, but still 2 years out of college she is working for her Uncle Robert. She feels like she can never do enough given how much her uncle's have done for her since her graduation. They pay most of her rent, they've give her a job, and they watch out for her in a way no one else ever could.
Calvin is a supremely talented guitarist, that Holland has been listening to for months as he plays at the Subway station. The only thing holding back Calvin from fulfilling his dreams of playing guitar professionally and being recognized for his talent is that he has been living in the US illegally. Originally from Ireland, Calvin moved to New York for school and stayed to hopefully catch his big break.
So what will happen when Holland sees the perfect opportunity to pay back her Uncle through Calvin? How will Holland be able to separate her actual feelings from the fake image her and Calvin must uphold?
Even though the beginning left me a little unsatisfied, the rest of the novel is wonderful! I think Christina Lauren improve with each novel they write! I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to read this book. Any fan of this duo will love ROOMIES, and any fan of Romance will too!
From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren’s (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You / Hating You) new romance.
Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.
Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a bigtime musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until he admits his student visa has expired and he’s in the country illegally.
Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?
