Grave Phantoms is the conclusion to the Roaring Twenties series by Jenn Bennett. It follows the story of Astrid Magnusson and Bo Yeung. Astrid's older brothers Winter and Lowe were the leading men in the previous books. Astrid and Bo have played small parts throughout the series, and it was easy to tell there was an attraction between them.
While the story was a little predictable, because the romance was hinted at previously, the novel started out slow. The attraction between Bo and Astrid is tenuous and new. Bo doesn't want to risk the wrath of Winter nor lose the family he's come to know, because of his love for Astrid. Plus there is the problem of the laws of the time prohibiting a connection between the two because Bo is Chinese and Astrid is white. The romance moved a little too slowly for me to begin with, but once it got started there was no stopping it!
There is a paranormal twist to this novel, just like the others in the series. There is Aztec idols, time-travel, and strange rituals. When a yacht crashes into the Magnusson's dock, the problem literally falls into the laps of Bo and Astrid. While investigating Astrid discovers a strange idol that causes her to pass out when she touches it. It is up to Bo and Astrid to figure out what exactly is going on, before Astrid experiences something worse than passing out.
Overall, a very well thought out ending to a trilogy. I recommend it to anyone who's read the previous books in the series, although it is not completely necessary. Most of the characters from previous novels are explained.
From the author of Grim Shadows and Bitter Spirits comes the new Roaring Twenties novel in the series hailed as “Boardwalk Empire meets Ghost Hunters, but so much better” (Molly Harper, national bestselling author of the Jane Jameson series).
