Grave Matters

A Night Owls Novel, #2

Grave Matters by Lauren M. Roy is the second book in the Night Owls series. Usually when the first book in a series is successful, the second book falls short. In this case, I'd say that the second book was better than the first. While I'm not sure if Roy is a newer author, I feel like with the experience she gained in writing Night Owls applies well to Grave Matters.

Since there really didn't need to be any introduction into the world, and the characters I thought the book would move a lot quicker. However, it starts off rather slow in my opinion, but picks up later. There are separate story lines following each character. Their each involved in a different "case" so-to-speak, but all of them converge into a united plot.

I like the characters. Elly, Cavale and Chaz are my favorites. I think Elly is stronger than she gives herself credit for, and stronger than Cavale wants her to be, because then she won't need him. Chaz, in my mind, is the underdog. He wants to be able to hold his own in the supernatural world around him.

I found the premise and plot to be quite interesting. A Necromancer is controlling ghosts and ghouls, but what is his goal? Vampires are revolting, and trying to take territory. Does Val need to get involved? How much danger is Elly in by working for Ivanov. Roy's writing, particularly her metaphors, and simile's are beautiful to read. I liked the way she chose to describe things, which can be everyday normal things like the wind, and she made it sounds like something almost new.

If you enjoyed the first novel give Grave Matters a chance. If you like Urban Fantasy, check out the Night Owls series.
