Cold-Hearted Rake

Cold-Hearted Rake is the first book in The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. Kleypas is well known for her historical romance books and there is a certain expectation when starting one of her books. The romance in this novel is a slow burn. The hero and heroine really hate each other in the beginning and that evolves into attraction but it takes more than half the book to get there. There is a lot of historical detail involved in this story, which I like, but if you're in it for the romance you may want to look elsewhere. The love scenes are well done and intimate without feeling cookie-cutter. The romance of Kathleen and Devon is a little overshadowed by the possible romance of Lord Winterbourne and Lady Helen, which is covered in the second book of the series. As an introduction to a series, this book is spot on. It has a great cast of characters and enough intrigue to leave me wanting to read the next book. I recommend Cold-Hearted Rake to anyone who is a Kleypas fan, or a fan of historical romance.

Lady Trenear is a young widow whose husband died after only three days of marriage. Devon Ravenel has inherited Theo's estate after his death, saddled with the responsibility of the estate, Theo's widow, and three sisters. It is a disaster from the start. Devon does not want anything to do with the estate, but Kathleen must try to convince him to take it on.
