Alera McPherson's father has mysteriously disappeared and she has been told by the King she must marry within six months after her father's disappearance. All of a sudden she is grabbed by two hands, thrown on her stomach, a sack from overhead, tied up, and knocked out. Duncan Ranald finds her pulling herself from the ocean water, up onto the beach, she runs to the woods and he hears her talking to her guardian angel "Henry" to save her when a wild boar comes upon her. Duncan kills the boar and when he hears she is English he decides to take her as his mistress as revenge on her family. He brings her home to help her recover as she is frozen to near to death. When his sister-in-law sees her, she decides to make it her mission to get them together.
Duncan's last wife died leaving a six-year-old daughter who will not come out of her shell. When Duncan hears Alera's story of abuse and almost being raped by her uncle he decides he'll marry her as well. When he hears her godfather is King Henry he maliciously grins and the gears start grinding. But Duncan's thoughts of revenge soon change to love. But can he win Alaris love? And will Alera be able to reach Duncan's daughter Meghan and bring her back to life?
This was a great book! I highly recommend it! Alera is a complex and wonderful character. And Duncan starts out with bad intentions towards Alera, but soon falls in love with her and all her canny ways. This is a well-written story with great plot lines! Definitely a keeper!
