The 4th book of The Gardella Vampire Chronicles opens with Victoria Grantworth de Lacey having returned to London, and she’s not feeling quite herself. Victoria is still feeling strange after her almost deadly encounter with Beauregard. Even though he is dead and gone thanks to Sebastian, Beauregard’s vampire blood still burns in her veins. While Victoria is having a hard enough time dealing with the strange new feelings and impulses assaulting her body and mind as soon as she returns home to London her mother is all over her about “social obligations”.
Never a dull moment in Victoria’s life, she soon has her hands full with her mother, her social life, the appearance of the new Marques of Rockley and most frightening of all – dead bodies start showing up in daylight, bodies that have been mauled by a vampire… a day walking vampire. While Victoria struggles to find out who the daytime vampire is she discovers she is the prime suspect in the murders.
To further complicate matters Max has returned to London without his Venator powers. Victoria finds herself torn between the stubborn and aloof Max and the ever present Sebastian who has made his feelings for Victoria quite clear. Victoria fears for Max’s safety because rumor has it vampire queen Lilith is back in town and Max was once her favorite plaything. While trying to keep Max safe she has to keep Sebastian at arm’s length. The tide seems to be changing as to where her heart may lie. Who will win her heart? Will it be beautiful golden boy Sebastian? Or will she choose Max despite his arrogance and roughness?
Colleen Gleason has done a fabulous job once again blending history with a believable paranormal tale. Another page turner that will keep you reading until the end. You won’t want to put it down and you will not want it to end. Some books you just can’t wait for them to be done, others you want to keep going and going. Gleason’s Gardella series is one that needs to keep going. You’ll feel disappointed when the book ends, not because of the content of the book but because you want to know more.
The ever present fight between good and evil has Victoria struggling to save everyone from the vampires. In When Twilight Burns, Victoria worries about saving Max from Lilith, the new King of England from whatever awful plan the vampires have come up with, and she even has to worry about saving herself as the vampire blood inside her threatens to take over.
The war raging inside Victoria may be the toughest battle she has ever faced. Can she win the war against herself or will she succumb to the power of the vampire blood inside her?
Victoria is such an engaging character, she definitely “stakes the undead with the best of them” (quoting the Detroit Free Press). All of Gleason’s characters are so real, so full of life they jump off the page. I feel Victoria’s dilemmas, I feel Sebastian’s love for Victoria and his fear of losing her. I can even feel Max’s walls that he has thrown up around himself, the bitterness he has wrapped himself in so he doesn’t get too involved. Gleason has successfully created a world and characters that leap right off the page and into your life, fascinating, well written and completely engaging.
I am really going to miss this series, only one book left which will be out in March 2009. I can’t wait to read it.
Special Notes: Be on the lookout for an upcoming interview with the author of When Twilight Burns, Colleen Gleason.
