Val Deniston is haunted by the car accident that ended her career as a cookbook publicist, so she’s traded in New York and returned to her roots near the Chesapeake Bay. A “home cook” herself, Val gets a job managing the Cool Down Café at the local health club while preparing to write her own cookbook, however, the murder of one of the club’s patrons sidetracks her a bit, particularly when her cousin is suspected of the crime.

The first in a new series called the “Five Ingredient Mysteries” is a totally enjoyable read. There are plenty of quirky characters, the staple in a cozy (particularly Val’s eccentric Grandpa, or as he’s now known, the “Codger Cook” as well as a promising love interest.
